This Is Us season 6 episode 13 recap: Day of the Wedding

As everyone gets ready for Kate and Philip’s wedding, Randall notices the current state of his mom’s illness in this week’s episode of This is Us season 6.

The thirteenth episode of This Is Us season 6 starts with a brief flashback of a young mom Rebecca taking care of her family. She’s looking to make some changes to the mundane like changing her hairstyle.

This focus on the Pearson matriarch blends beautifully with an elderly Rebecca getting her hair done for Kate and Phillip’s wedding day.

This Is Us season 6 episode 13: Madison and Beth on the case

Rebecca’s Alzheimer’s disease is more prevalent now than ever. Especially when she refuses to have her hair styled until the patient Miguel helps reminds his wife about the significance of today.

Randall comes into the room to give his mom the rundown of her responsibilities. But this is when he sees his mom struggling as she mentions her late husband.

Miguel takes Randall aside and assures the now Senator Randall Pearson that as long as things go as planned, Rebecca will be just fine today. As she is getting ready, Kate is welcomed by her future husband, waltzing in because he does not believe in superstitions as this is his second wedding.

The two go over the plan for Rebecca to sing for everyone later, something Kate is understandably anxious about.

After they give the couple their space, Madison and Beth go into Kevin’s room where the twins’ clothes are. In the room, Kate’s bridesmaids find clues of Kevin having a secret, steamy, romance this weekend.

Together they start trying to figure out who Kevin slept with. Beth makes sure Madison is ok with doing this, and after confirming she is, the two get their Agatha Christie on.

This Is Us season 6 episode 13: Randall witnesses “the new normal”

During the wedding photos, Kevin and Elijah are trading playful jabs at one another when Rebecca compliments Kevin by calling him “Jack.” Randall does not hold his tongue this time and corrects his mom about the passing of his father.

This aggravates Rebecca as she is confused about it all until Kevin steps in to calm her down. A flashback is next of Rebecca unveiling her new shorter hairstyle, in the same vein as Princess Diana, to her family.

Jack is cordial with his comments but starts laughing when little Kevin is pretending to be Captain Hook since Rebecca looks like Peter Pan. The laughing ceases when Jack sees his wife’s face and he immediately turns stern.

He sits his kids down to have a chat about being nice and respectful to their mother. After she feels like her family is against her, Rebecca eventually storms off regretting her haircut choice.

After the wedding photos, the Big Three and Philip sit down to talk about how they should handle their mom’s unfortunate Alzheimer’s disease. The siblings think Rebecca should not perform but Philip speaks up and gives a beautiful little monologue about how music is good for the soul and Rebecca’s memory.

He also reassures his bride to be that her mom will perform fabulously. Audiences quickly learn this is all a facade put on by Philip since he tells Randall away from everyone, that he is not sure if Rebecca can perform.

Nonetheless he truly hopes she does so Kate’s day is the best it can be. While they are moving about the hotel, Madison and Beth are still examining the clues to try and find out who Kevin hooked up with.

This looks to be all but confirmed when they overhear Cassidy saying she needs her wrap that happens to be in Kevin’s room from last night.

This Is Us season 6 episode 13: Randall and Miguel taste some wine

Randall and Philip arrive to check on Rebecca where they find her, Miguel, Nicky, and Edie playing cards. When Randall brings up his mom’s performance, Miguel immediately steps in to separate his stepson from his wife.

Randall and Miguel enjoy some wine tasting they have been planning for a bit. At the tasting, Miguel finally gets through to Randall about relaxing this weekend.

But this leads to Randall asking about some of the hand tremors Miguel has. Miguel blatantly ignores Randall’s insinuation and just keeps talking about the wine.

Nicky is being mercilessly put down through Golden Girl’s insults from Rebecca and Edie when Rebecca sees Jack enter the room complaining about his night last night. Rebecca offers to go for a walk and talk with her husband when it is carefully revealed that it has been Kevin she was talking to.

In a flashback to the new haircut, Jack is trying to console his wife about her regretful new hairstyle and the mundane feeling of her life. Rebecca asks her husband if he likes the routine of their lives.

Jack explains that since his parents were unknown timebombs growing up, the simplicity of their life is beautiful to him. On their walk, Rebecca’s episode has ended so Kevin is able to talk to his mom as her son about his upsetting night last night.

As he is talking, Rebecca’s attention wavers, and when she comes to, she is talking to Jack again. She explains that Kevin just needs to figure himself out.

She continues about how even though it was their first love, the two of them will be good together, alluding to Sophie.

This Is Us season 6 episode 13:  Kate and Philip’s Ceremony

Once they arrive back after their walk, Madison and Beth watch Kevin and his mom have a very brief and tense conversation with Sophie. This leads to the bridesmaids re-opening the case since they believe Kevin also hooked up with Sophie last night.

Miguel and Randall are packing up the wine when Randall is clearly patronizing his mom’s husband since the senator sees Miguel as weak. This rightfully upsets Miguel since he is still a strong able-bodied man.

Miguel explains to Randall that he wanted one hour of one day to just drink wine and forget about his much larger issues. However, Randall had to focus on the problems.

Young Rebecca is watching TV with the Big Three when Jack reveals he shaved off his beard leaving only a mustache. Everyone is shocked and the kids are brutally honest again.

Jack then goes to his wife and tells her he has a full night planned tonight. They are going to get all fancy and have fun on a Wednesday.

The ceremony for Kate and Philip’s wedding has finally arrived and it all goes off beautifully. This trend continues through the speeches at the reception, except for Kevin’s attempt at comedy and impersonations.

Finally, it is Randall’s turn, and his speech is about remembering to celebrate the good times, especially when you’re older because time feels like it moves faster. After his speech, he welcomes his mom to the stage so she can finally give her performance so many have been worried about.

On their fancy date, Rebecca and Jack celebrate each other’s new looks before Jack basically dares the mother of his children to go play a song on the restaurant’s piano. Since this is a new and improved Rebecca, she agrees and has fun doing it.

This moment parallels with older Rebecca going up on stage to perform at her daughter’s wedding. After she finds her key, Rebecca performs “The Forever Now” and does not leave a dry eye in the reception hall.

After her performance, the reception carries on with dancing, cake, and drinks. Madison and Beth are still grilling Kevin when the wedding singer approaches him to talk about last night.

This is now the third woman who Kevin might have slept with, so the bridesmaids have no solid clue on which one it is. Randall is able to get some private time with his brother and asks how his night was, and Kevin replies with he doesn’t know yet.
