Mothers and Mother Figures of Bridgerton: Violet Bridgerton

In celebration of Mother’s Day, we decided to take a look at some of the mothers and mother figures from the hit Netflix show Bridgerton. The series which recently completed its second season is full of empowering, relatable, witty, and sometimes humorous women.

They are far from perfect but work with what they are given, especially in a society where women are meant to be possessed and hopefully loved. We’ve decided to start with Lady Violet Bridgerton, mother to eight children, and the voice of reason within her household.

Violet Bridgerton played by Ruth Gemmell (Utopia, Penny Dreadful) always appears calm and collected, even when things go awry. She loves all of her children equally, even if they sometimes act in disapproving ways.

Season 1 put her in the spotlight as not only was her eldest daughter Daphne ready to make her debut for the first time, but she is also chosen as Diamond of The First Water by Queen Charlotte. As much as this title will propel her daughter into even higher society, it puts an enormous amount of pressure on herself as well.

Becoming a widow and remaining a loving mother was both an easy and difficult task for Violet Bridgerton on Bridgerton.

Everyone in the ton would be watching Daphne with a magnifying glass and any mistakes or trouble would then be reflected upon Violet. Even though Daphne struggles through finding a match and then the unforeseen troubles that would follow in her marriage to Simon Basset, Violet was always there when her daughter needed her.

She provided her with actual advice and when she couldn’t she felt deeply guilty about it. One of Daphne’s martial struggles was her knowledge or lack thereof of sex.

Daphne believed she and Simon would become a happy couple, much like her own parents and everything would fall into place. But when it’s revealed that Simon could have children and just didn’t want them, Daphne’s perspective rapidly changed.

She lashed at her mother for refusing to teach her the important details of intimacy. All would later be forgiven and in the end Daphne’s marriage survives.

Season 2 put pressure on Violet yet again when her eldest son Anthony finally decided to find himself a wife. While she is pleased that the Viscount was finally taking his future seriously, she soon realizes he doesn’t share the same views as her of love.

Violet is understandably disappointed in her son but doesn’t lose hope that he would change his mind. Both she and Daphne make repeated attempts to talk some sense into him and eventually Anthony learns for himself the beauty, joy and power that comes from falling in love.

Ironically Anthony would prove to be the easier of her two children attending their first season. As much as Eloise would rather avoid the situation all together, Violet tries several different approaches to help and guide her daughter.

She acknowledges how her daughter is different than others her age but still tries to guide her as this is the only way she knows she can have a successful and safe future. When Lady Whistledown reveals all of Eloise’s secrets to the ton, including her spending time with Theo, without a chaperone I might add, Violet still doesn’t berate or betray her daughter.

She consoles her and finds a way through this momentary blip of unhappiness. As far as we can gather about Violet Bridgerton, she had to be a present and ever-loving mother to her eight children, even more so after her husband Edmund unexpectedly died.

For all of her hard work and aspirations to put her children’s needs first, she has proven herself to be a truly inspiring and amazing mother.
