Mothers and Mother Figures of Bridgerton: Lady Danbury
On May 8, we’ll be celebrating moms for Mother’s Day! We decided to take a look at the mothers and mother figures that grace our televisions in the Netflix show Bridgerton.
In our first installment, we spoke about Violet Bridgerton. Now it is Lady Danbury’s turn!
Not only is she extremely close to Violet Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte but she is wise, thoughtful, steadfast and a pure joy to watch. She’s been a guiding light for the likes of Simon Basset, and Kate Sharma, two characters equally struggling with love.
Lady Danbury played by Adjoa Andoh (Law & Order: UK, The Witcher) is an instant fan favorite the moment she makes her presence known. While little is known at the current moment about her past, including her deceased husband, she makes up for it in the present.
Guiding both men and women during the season is not an easy task but one Lady Danbury on Bridgerton excels at marvelously.
She is the definition of sophistication and seems to be an expert in everything you could possibly want to know about the season, from presentation to marriage itself. In season 1 her bond with Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings is put to the test as the little boy she once knew, loved and practically raised has become a man with no interest in ever getting married.
Why? Well, after his mother Sarah tragically died giving birth to him, Simon grew up stammering but was overall very intelligent.
While his father viewed him as a disappointment and disgrace, Lady Danbury who was a dear friend of Sarah, stepped in. This impact would later cause Simon vow to never have an heir.
He wouldn’t tell Daphne about this until after they marry. But throughout Simon’s struggles and mistakes, he was proof that Lady Danbury did a wonderful job raising the young Duke.
In season 2 Lady Danbury hosts Mary Sheffield Sharma, her daughters Edwina and Kate and Kate’s Corgi, Newton for the season. The family has arrived to London from India in the hopes of finding a husband for Edwina.
That would be all fine and well except Kate was withholding a heavy secret. Now that we think of it, she and Simon have a lot in common.
If Edwina did not marry a man her grandparents approved of, she would not receive a dowry. Lady Sheffield Sharma married a man who wasn’t wealthy and already had a daughter of his own (Kate).
The trio arrived to London with the very last of their money. As much as Lady Danbury and Kate butt heads throughout the season, they become exceedingly close as well.
We found that she almost acted as another mother figure for Kate, being able to understand her conflict of whether to be with Anthony or not due to her sister’s infatuation and later engagement to the Viscount. While all her warnings were heeded late in the game, she did not despise Kate but stood by her side, even when it threatened her friendship with Violet Bridgerton.
Lady Danbury may be the only one who consistently sees the truth when others cannot and will not. Her honesty, guidance, and compassion have truly propelled her into fan favorite status.
Which Bridgerton character will she guide in season 3?
