Even in the world of superhero TV Shows, there are mothers and fathers. While parents have often been seen as expendable to help create the main characters in comics, this trend is changing.

Today, contemporary television shows are having the parents be the superheroes adding a whole new level of storytelling and complexities to work with. Below are a handful of examples of some of the best moms from the ever-expansive library of the superhero subgenre in television.

This woman is hurting and nobody is doing anything to help her, they are only trying to stop her. So when her powers created Billy and Tommy, it made sense that she became attached to these adorable cherubs.

While her trauma was blinding her less than stellar actions, the motivation of wanting what is best for her children can be empathized with by everyone who has ever cared for someone as much as themselves if not more.

4. Alex Danvers & Kelly Olsen – Supergirl

These two create one of the best romantic pairings in all of superhero TV shows, so they had to share one entry. The journey that Alex went on when she was discovering her sexuality is cookie cutter for shows on The CW, but not always when capes and Kryptonians are involved.

Alex’s journey mixed with the pure-hearted Kelly was a perfect match and proven when they adopt and begin raising Esme.

3. Lois Kent – Superman & Lois

While being Clark Kent’s breadwinner wife is easy, being the mother of Superman’s children has not been an easy task. In a society that tends to force women to choose either a family or a career, Lois is just that super that she can do both (with the help of Clark of course).

Even though she is the world’s greatest reporter and has seen her husband fight interdimensional monsters, Lois is grounded by her children and could easily summon her husband’s power to protect them.

2. Debbie Grayson – Invincible

Like Lois, Debbie’s husband is one of the strongest beings in the known universe, but Omni-Man is no Superman. The difficulties that Debbie endures for the sake of her evil husband and naive son are astounding to witness.

Even though she has no powers of her own, her willpower and determination are exquisite characteristics to have in a mom.

1. Angela Abar – Watchmen

One of the most kick-butt characters in all of HBO shows, superhero TV shows, and the entire history of television. Angela experienced the same sort of racist hate crime as her grandfather so it should not be shocking to see her protect her black children by any means.

For her, this means becoming a police officer while dressing up as a vigilante nun. While her husband’s mind is usually somewhere in space, Angela always finds a way to stay grounded and do whatever she can to love and protect her offspring.
