When This Is Us debuted in 2016, nobody outside of Dan Fogelman maybe could have foretold how much love and compassion this show would bring throughout its episodes and seasons. In the six years since the pilot aired, audiences have been greeted by some incredible characters.

The most beautifully written characters are the various mothers. The moms of This Is Us are some of the most dynamic and complex characters in the entire show and they all bring a unique path to the series to create equally special mothers.

So, for Mother’s Day, let’s take a look at these incredible maternal figures from NBC’s premiere drama. Before this goes further, however, a quick honorable mention to Carol Clarke (Beth’s mom), Marilyn Pearson (Jack’s mom), and Malik.

Malik often finds himself being an amazing and sole parent for Janelle.

When Cassidy was blindly introduced in season 4, audiences did not know how she would fit in with the Pearsons and their crazy multi-generational family. Since then, though, her role has been near perfection as a bridge for Kevin and his Uncle Nicky to become closer and communicate better with one another and the world.

While doing all of that, Cassidy also shares custody of her son with her ex-husband. While the reason for divorce was mainly because Cassidy’s military-caused PTSD and her other demons, she has not let that stop her from being a great mother to her son.

Every time the audience sees her, there is a clear improvement in her demeanor and that is all because she wants to be the best mom for her son.

Madison is truly an enigma because her arc throughout the entire show might be one of the biggest of any non-Pearson. Her journey from annoying, skinny person to Kate’s maid of honor twice over was beautiful to witness.

During her journey, she naturally fell for Kevin and the two had twins. They’re engagement and wedding were called off, because Madison recognized their relationship was only happening because they had children.

As shown through flashbacks, there is nothing Madison wanted more than to be a princess and find her Prince Charming. She could have easily ridden the coattails of the wealthiest Pearson, but that would have been a life built on a lie.

The knowledge and maturity to step away from something hollow and gilded in greatness is not an easy task. But the Madison of season 5 was not the same viewers were annoyed by in season 1.

Moms of This is Us: The Bedrocks

She wanted to be a mother, and that is exactly what Kate Pearson did. When society, doctors, her loved ones, and her own mind tried to cast doubt on her, Kate was never deterred.

The journey was a long and difficult one, but the birth of little baby Jack made it all worth it. Even when the universe threw the curveball of a kid who was blind, Kate persevered and showed him and Hailey the same amount of unconditional love that any child would be elated to receive.

Similar to her BFF Madison, Kate walked away from an unhealthy relationship with Toby for her own sake and for the sake of their children. Toby’s tragic arc of seeing Jack as broken, (because Toby viewed himself as broken) was heartbreaking to witness.

However, the way Kate handled it is a thing of legend. Kate knows Toby loves their children and does everything he can to provide.

But she also knows they can’t provide a full happy life for them when they are together. If it was not for the next woman on this list, Beth would be in the main event slot, however she does not have the natural bonus of being older.

The magic that Beth brings to every scene she is in should be celebrated whenever the chance arises. A big chunk of that magic originates in her maternal role to Tess, Annie, and Deja.

While Beth does not always understand what her kids are talking about, the love she has for her three daughters is never in doubt. When her mom came to visit and implicitly challenged Beth, she rose to the occasion and evolved into a more empathetic person to her children.

There is not a lot that Beth does wrong as a character, or a mother and it is always beautiful to witness.

Rebecca Pearson. There are no amazing moms in Beth, Kate, Madison, or Cassidy if it is not for the matriarch of the Pearson family.

Even though her character fulfills the role of “being an amazing parent in spite of her examples”, Rebecca has developed into one of the best-written characters of the entire series if not one of the best protagonists in all of television. Everything Rebecca has done since she got pregnant has been for her kids and family.

The thing that makes Rebecca Pearson stand out, however, is the fact that she never has to compromise who she is or what she believes to protect her children. The only evidence one needs is to look at Rebecca’s children and grandchildren to see what an amazing human being and mother she is.
