It’s safe to say, the 1998 film, Practical Magic starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman is well known and quite the cult classic. The film itself, based on the book by Alice Hoffman, concludes well but what if a TV series Rules of Magic, were to continue the story?

The film doesn’t necessarily need to be enjoyed during the Fall and Halloween season, as while magic is involved, there is so much more to the compelling story. Sisters Sally (Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Kidman) lose both their parents as children and go off to live with their aunts Frances (Stockard Channing) and Jet (Dianne Wiest).

The family comes from a long line of witches and unfortunately suffers at the hands of a curse involving the men they love. In the end the two sisters are able to defeat the curse, Sally finds love once again, and they manage to also change the opinion of the town they reside in.

So where does this TV series Rules of Magic fit in? Variety released an article back in 2019 stating that this prequel, Rules of Magic has been ordered for HBO Max. Also based on a book by Hoffman, with the same name, it will follow Franny, Jet, and Vincent Owens.

Will the Practical Magic prequel Rules of Magic still be arriving to HBO Max and if so, when?

Wait, that means Sally and Gillian had an uncle this whole time?! Looper, who also following updates regarding this series shares, “The series will be set in 1960s New York City, so we anticipate many fascinating subplots centered around the influx of culture of that era.”

Wait, does this also mean we’ll finally learn what happens to Ethan? The man Aunt Frances assumably lost as she references to him rather despairingly in the film?

Unfortunately, there has yet to be official announcements as per filming, casting or when it’s projected to be released. The pandemic which followed not long after the announcement probably didn’t help matters either.

In the meantime, we’ll pay attention to any further developments as they appear and hope we see this prequel series come together very soon!
