Episode 403 of the Netflix series Castlevania starts unexpectedly with FlysEyes (Gildart Jackson) going to see his creator, Isaac (Adetokumboh M’Cormack). FlysEyes is still obedient to his master but wonders what his actual plans are.

Why has Isaac tasked the night creatures with burying people rather than slaughtering or subjugating them? FlyEyes even asks, “Why do you have us going against our nature?” as creatures created specifically to wreak havoc on humans.

Isaac does explain himself somewhat while feeding FlysEyes some berries (which seem to trigger vague memories of his previous life, presumably as a human). Isaac says he plans to bring an army from Hell.

Later, in another poignant scene, Isaac talks to the frozen statue of the wizard he had killed. He says killing him felt just, and that he felt more like the hand than the knife (likely meaning he is no longer used as a tool by others, but instead has his own ideas and aspirations).

Castlevania and Isaac’s ongoing transformation(?)

Castlevania suggests that Isaac has changed, with a greater sense of agency in this world. On that note, when Varney (Malcolm McDowell) magically appears in the mirror and asks if Isaac remembers him, he snarkily replies, “You do not look memorable.”

With multiple characters working to return Dracula (Graham McTavish) from the dead, Isaac rejects Varney’s alliance offer, “hanging up” on him and perhaps earning the vamp’s wrath. Of course, Varney isn’t the only vampire besides Dracula in the Castlevania universe.

The series also checks in with Carmilla (Jaime Murray) and her vampire sisterhood. Two of them, Morana (Yasmine Al Massri) and Striga (Ivana Miličević) are having a daytime meeting in a (literally) shady place.

They discuss standard fare, such as how humans are mere “pigs with shoes.” However, to their surprise, some humans begin to attack them.

The protective shelter around them is torn, leaving the vampires exposed to the dangers of sunlight. Interestingly, Striga has day armor to protect herself and fights off the human onslaught while Morana hides in a trunk.

More jadedness…but more night creatures, too!

If you have followed Castlevania, you likely get the sense that most of its characters have jaded moments, and this episode is no different. After this latest human slaughter, the sisters ponder if they should be at war with humans forever.

However, soon after that bit of introspection, they finally learn from Carmilla that Hector can start making night creatures. Moments later, Trevor (Richard Armitage) and Sypha (Alejandra Reynoso) survey some carnage they stumble upon.

Trevor also learns that a glowing stone can energize his magic dagger (and no, that is not a metaphor). This episode of Castlevania does seem like a bit of a placeholder, but there is at least a bit of carnage here and there.

Plus, it’s not like the story does not move along at all. Still, one can’t help but notice that these vampire sisters are taking their sweet time with their sinister plans.

It is nice to see Isaac becoming more of his own person, though we know by this point he’s probably not the nicest person you’d ever meet.
