The fifth episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi season 1 begins with a brief flashback to a young Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi dueling and practicing while Anakin was still a Padawan.
This allows the episode to return to the series’ main timeline, which shows Darth Vader being updated on Kenobi’s whereabouts by Reva the Third Sister. Because of her success in discovering they need to go to Jabiim, Reva is promoted to Grand Inquisitor by Lord Vader.
Now with her new title, she can lead a group to find the Jedi. On Jabiim, Leia’s rescue party returns with one less pilot.
Ben and Leia reunite with Haja Estree from Daiyu who the Empire is now hunting since he helped Kenobi escape. Everyone in the hideout is on edge, as they get ready to move locations to the next safe space.
Obi-Wan Kenobi season 1 episode 5: Anakin’s beginnings
As they are on their way, Reva is able to hack into Leia’s droid LOLA and use it to close the hangar doors. Ben knows this is Vader because it aligns with what he knows about his former student.
This is exemplified with a continuation of the opening flashback where we see Anakin’s clues that he could be manipulated by the dark side of the Force. Ben gives a rousing speech to all the normal citizens about how they need to work together to defend themselves.
If they buy Roken (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) enough time to open the doors, then they will all get out and escape before the Empire breaks in. Grand Inquisitor Reva and an army of stormtroopers arrive on the ground and use a battering ram-like weapon to try and break down their gate.
When the door is almost broken through, Ben decides to approach the gate and fend off Reva. She senses this and the two speak to one another on either side of the thick metal slab.
Ben asks how she knew Vader’s name used to be Anakin, eventually realizing she was one of the younglings that a freshly coronated Darth Vader slaughtered in the Jedi Temple during Order 66. The titular Jedi Master goes on to discover Reva wants Anakin dead for killing all the younglings and the only family she ever had.
Ben tries to convince her to work with him, but she knows Kenobi does not want to kill Anakin due to his Jedi ways. All of this conversation comes to an end when Reva uses her lightsaber to cut through the weakened metal and breaks open the gate.
Obi-Wan Kenobi season 1 episode 5: The Empire breaks in
Ben and the other fighters of the group slowly retreat while fending off the Empire. Tala falls to the ground with stormtroopers right behind them which leads to her mute droid NED-B sacrificing himself to protect her.
Tala uses this protection to close a blast door between her and Ben and sets off a grenade. All of the fleeing families and fighters are able to escape to the hangar where Ben realizes he must give himself up to buy more time.
When he is in Empire custody, Ben talks quietly to Reva trying to convince her again to switch sides. Using this new information about Reva as a youngling, Ben is able to get through to her.
She lets Ben go back inside to “wait” for Vader but they both know he will escape. That is exactly what happens and aligns with Leia fixing LOLA and the hangar doors so they can escape.
As everyone hurries, Haja drops the communicator that Bail Organa sent with info about Luke Skywalker that should not be seen by Vader. Darth Vader arrives on the ground and goes looking for Kenobi inside, under Reva’s direction, but he is not there.
Cutting between the training session of Anakin and Obi-Wan, audiences learn Kenobi used Vader’s desire to always prove himself and win to allow the rebels to escape.
Obi-Wan Kenobi season 1 episode 5: Reva makes her choice
With Vader made to look like a fool, Reva attempts to slay her tormenter down, however he sees it coming and stops her. The two duel with Darth Vader never losing the upper hand before he stabs Reva in the stomach, the exact way he did in the Jedi Temple all those years ago.
Stormtroopers fall in behind Vader led by the original Grand Inquisitor who Reva thought she killed in episode two. The Grand Inquisitor gloats about how he is better than Reva and is leaving her where they found her, in the gutter.
After the Empire leaves Reva with a lightsaber-shaped hole in her abdomen, she notices the communicator that Haja accidentally dropped. Even though it is a little busted, some of Bail Organa’s words come through as she hears twins, Vader, Owen, the boy, and Tatooine.
On their escape ship, Ben senses Reva has discovered this information and begins to panic knowing he might have failed at protecting the Twins, just like he failed with Anakin.
Do you think Reva will use Bail’s message for the Dark Side or the Light Side of the Force? How do you think Ben will try and fix this potential grave mistake he made?
