Ms. Marvel Season 1 Episode 2 recap – Controlling her powers
Kamala is feeling fantastic thanks to her powers. But that doesn’t change the fact that her insufferable classmate Zoe must be the center of attention as she talks about her brush with death and getting saved by the mysterious hero, she’s calling Night Light (seriously, that’s the best you can do?).
But Zoe’s big mouth catches the attention of Special Agent Cleary who drills her about who the mystery hero is. Zoe can’t say much but Cleary can figure out some things from her facial reactions.
Outside of class, Kamala and Bruno work together to figure out what her powers are, where they came from and how to control them. Bruno discovers that her powers actually come from within her.
The bangle is simply a way for her to use them. But all of this progress may be coming to a halt due to the new student, Kamran.
He’s attractive, charming and has a lot more in common with Kamala than Bruno does. Bruno makes it no secret that he doesn’t like Kamran.
Kamran has been getting close to Kamala as he offers to teach her how to drive while talking about his family and interests in Bollywood movies. But Bruno’s got bigger things to worry about himself when he learns he’s been accepted into an Early Immersion program at Caltech in California.
Will he go or stay? It will most likely depend on Kamala who still views him as her friend.
Ms. Marvel Season 1 Episode 2 recap – Time for Change
Kamala’s other close friend Nakia is unaware of her powers but the two bond in a different way. They attend a Mosque service together where it’s very apparent the women’s section, which is separate from the men’s, is less appealing to tiles coming apart and being so far away they can barely hear prayers.
Kamala suggests that Nakia run for a seat on the council, so that they can make some real changes. Changes, that are necessary especially after the audience learns of some harsher aspects of history.
This includes the Partition of India that directly affected Kamala’s mother when she was a child. She was able to get on the last train with her father but not much was known of her mother, Kamala’s grandmother.
Even when Kamala tries calling her to ask about the bangle, she refuses to speak about it outside of the fact it belonged to her mother Aisha, Kamala’s great grandmother. Kamala’s mother knows something she’s not sharing with the family but Kamala hopes to get more answers at the Eid Mubarak festival.
Nakia and Kamala want to use this opportunity to get votes while also getting intel about her great grandmother. Of course, rumors about her range from murder to affairs.
Kamala isn’t able to gather much information when a young boy nearly falls from a Mosque tower while trying to take selfies. Kamala springs into action and saves the boy but struggles when visions return of a woman she doesn’t recognize.
Feeling startled by the visions and almost failing to save the boy, she flees.
Ms. Marvel Season 1 Episode 2 recap – The Cliffhanger
Kamala doesn’t have time to catch her breath when drones spot her and the agents under Special Agent Cleary arrive to arrest her. She barely escapes when Kamran appears in his car.
They flee the scene when its revealed Kamran’s mother is in the backseat, seemingly excited to meet her. This seems to insinuate that Kamran had other reasons for getting close to Kamala.
Ms. Marvel Season 1 Episode 2 review
Episode 2 continues to portray Kamala as a believable, young high school student. Her instant crush on Kamran is something probably every high school girl or boy can relate to. So is her dedication and support of Nakia.
While she’s unaware of Bruno’s acceptance to Caltech, she’ll surely support his decision either way. But what she may not be thinking about is how long can she really keep her powers a secret?
Episode 2 wasted no time in Kamala’s identity almost being revealed to Special Agent Cleary and his team. But now that her crush Kamran is aware and seemingly not surprised, what direction will the series take?
Who is his mother? Does she know about the bangle?
The episode flowed beautifully like the one prior, introducing new characters well and taking the time to talk about Muslim traditions and history. Both the good and the bad (sorry about your shoes Nakia).
At some point Kamala’s mother is going to find out what is going on and she’ll most likely have to come clean about what she’s been hiding. Perhaps she once used the bangle herself or perhaps she’s seen what it can do and thus fears it.
Either way Ms. Marvel is probably preparing to have Kamala and her mother create a new and deeper bond than they ever had before. We eagerly look forward to it.
