The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 3 recap: Pocket Full of Lightning

As Five tries to stop the paradox, Viktor and Allison try and smooth things with the Sparrows in the third episode of The Umbrella Academy season 3.

This third episode of The Umbrella Academy season 3 begins with a narrator discussing the Commission’s protocol on handling the Grandfather Paradox. A little skit plays explaining how this paradox ensues if a person travels back in time and kills a direct relative because then it would be impossible for the person to be born.

Luther is then seen leaving The Sparrow Academy after a night of pleasure with Sloane. The Umbrella’s Number One walks through the city with a pep in his step, even though his surroundings are opposed to his mood.

When Luther stops at a kiosk for gum and condoms, the energy orb pulses in The Sparrow Academy. This blast knocked out the power when it expanded and then evaporated the vendor when it retracted.

Luther uses the opportunity to steal some extra condoms.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 3: Five tries to find a plan

Back to The Hotel Obsidian, Five has finished explaining what a Grandfather Paradox is and how they caused it. He does not have much more information other than that since it has all been hypothetical until now.

Five goes on to hypothesize that the weird disappearances are the result of the universe trying to cope with this paradox. Therefore, the orb of energy in the Sparrow’s basement is the direct result of the Umbrellas not being adopted by Reginald.

After Five goes to talk to Lila, someone who he can brainstorm better with, Luther returns to no fanfare since nobody realized he was missing. Luther, who has sweetened up to the Sparrows, says the only thing they want is Marcus.

But his siblings can’t help. Upstairs, Lila is greeted by Five who she instantly tries to kill.

Five gets the upper hand and Lila retreats. He catches his estranged sister up and discovers that both briefcases she has are not operating.

Therefore, he states they need to work together.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 3: Luther is soft for the Sparrows

As they are leaving, Diego and Stanley find them while Diego tries to pawn off his son. Even though he is still hung up on Lila, she explains it’s been a decade for her so she is over him.

Lila and Five then leave to prevent the end of the world as Diego is left with his sarcastic son. Luther, Viktor, and Allison theorize Marcus was eaten by the paradox.

Viktor and Allison decide to go and talk with the Sparrows, planning on telling them the truth. They agree to leave Luther behind since he is a little too soft on their supposed adversaries.

In Fei’s room, she and Ben ignore the missing person cases shown around the city to focus on the Umbrellas. As they do this, they tread carefully as they both explain how they want to move up the numerical ladder resulting in Ben and Fei respectively become Numbers One and Two.

Down in The Hotel Obsidian’s lobby, the strange man from the woods and bus checks into the establishment confirming his name to be Lester Pocket. Viktor and Allison arrive at The Sparrow Academy where they meet Ben and Fei.

After Allison lies about having Marcus in their possession, Ben lies about having the briefcase. Nevertheless, the two duos agree to meet this evening at The Hotel Obsidian for an exchange.

Walking back to the hotel, Viktor explains how Allison was acting reckless and impulsive. He wants to do this together so Allison improvising and almost starting a fight is not going to help.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 3: Klaus sneaks around…

Meanwhile, Klaus goes for a dive through sewage and sludge so he can sneak into Reginald Hargreeves’s office. Klaus asks if he killed their mother, but Reginald says no.

This is when Jayme and Alphonso enter. Klaus hides and overhears the two Sparrows making his dad take medicine and sign a document he did not read over.

Down in the basement, Ben and Fei go looking for the briefcase where they find Grace and the energy orb caused by the paradox. Grace informs them this is where Marcus went and that this orb is God reincarnated.

Inside The Hotel Obsidian’s utility room, Lila and Five are using a car battery and Five’s powers to try and hotwire the briefcase. This plan fails miserably, something Lila assumed would happen, so they are now down to one briefcase.

After the two retrace their long and complicated history, they agree trust is off the table but there might be some honesty within white-hot hatred. Therefore, the two agree to combine their powers to jump farther through time safely.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 3: …and gets some information

Luther and Diego are both working on important things like Luther making a mixtape for Sloane and Diego making Molotov cocktails for their defenses. Diego is mad at his brother for not taking this seriously.

This is when he finds out Luther hooked up with the enemy. This does not stop Diego from wanting to hurt the Sparrows, but he does see something in Luther’s eyes.

Reginald and Klaus are watching the news as the two bond over feeling like outcasts and alone in their world. When Reginald complains about the pills, Klaus gives him advice on how to hide pills in his mouth and not take them.

Reginald has begun admiring Klaus, something that the addict loves to hear. In his room, Lester Pocket is listening to this deep bass meditation sound on his track player before laying down and listening to his stomach.

As he listens, the sound coming from his abdomen resembles a sleeping frog. Diego is still worried about saving the world, but Luther is being adorable by ensuring Viktor knows they love and care about him by wanting to throw a party.

When Viktor walks up to them, Diego calls Luther out. Viktor brightly smiles because he knows his brothers love him.

Luther ends the conversation by complimenting his brother’s new hair. It’s a simple gesture, and compliment but one that means the world to Viktor.

Klaus and Reginald are having some ice cream and watching TV when Reginald falls asleep. In his sleep, Klaus hears his father murmur “Oblivion.”

He then overhears Grace singing. He goes to check it out and finds his maternal robot worshipping the energy orb while speaking in tongues.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 3: A new challenger approaches

Five and Lila finish setting up their briefcase to prepare for their jump. After some strong concentration from both parties, the two make their jump.

They land in a blizzard-ridden tundra only to find out this is the Commission and they go inside. The lobby is playing host to a big game of Mahjong as the Sparrows arrive.

Ben informs them the deal is off. That is when Stanley comes running in with a Molotov cocktail but drops it, leading to a fire near innocent people.

Diego takes Stanley and gets his son out of there.

Ben commands Christopher to do his thing which turns out to be some sort of psychological torture on Viktor, Allison, and Luther. This is when Lester Pocket comes in and unleashes a blast of fire on the Sparrows.

This blast looks to kill Alphonso and Jayme, while weakening everyone else. Luther was able to protect Sloane but Ben, Fei, and Christopher retreat and leave the hotel.

After the chaos dies down, everyone looks to the man who just saved them. Everyone is confused, except for Viktor who knows this man is the person she looked after in 1963 because this man is a grown-up Harlan.
