The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 5 recap: Kindest Cut

Klaus discovers more about his connection to the dead and Viktor’s relationship with Harlan is tested in this episode of The Umbrella Academy season 3.

The fifth episode of The Umbrella Academy season 3 begins with Klaus waking up in the same afterlife, greeted by the same young woman on a bike from season 1 episode 7. This time she does not talk and just points Klaus in the direction he needs to go.

Klaus walks this way until he finds where memories play of three times that the Umbrellas Number Four did in fact die. The last of which is Stanley shooting him with the harpoon.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 5: Viktor learns more about Harlan

Viktor tries to get more answers out of Harlan, but he is being defensive. As frustration grows, the two both unleash a minor blast, knocking them both on their butts.

Finally, Harlan explains that when his mother died, he thought he finally sensed Viktor. Instead, it was their mothers.

This connection he formed, however, led to him feeling their pain and fear before accidentally killing them. Because of this horrible mistake on Harlan’s part, he hid away for thirty years until now.

Viktor explains that the pain Harlan caused was part of what Viktor placed in him. After dreaming of Ray, Allison wakes up bruised and scarred from the visit she and Diego paid to that white nationalist bar.

She goes to the lobby where Luther finds her, Viktor, and Diego all sporting wounds for different reasons.

Just when Luther tries blaming Harlan, Five and Lila return from the Commission. Lila hugs Diego as she explains she has less time to hold grudges now.

Diego sees Stanley walking around so he leaves just when Five is trying to call a family meeting to explain the Kugelblitz. After Diego catches up with Stanley, he finds out about the accident that led to his son killing Klaus.

In the afterlife, Klaus talks with a version of his birth mother, Rachael, who explains that he has died 56 times and he did not have to mourn her. She goes on to explain that finding who killed her will not give her son a purpose and alludes that Reginald can help with that.

At The Hotel Obsidian’s bar, Five explains how they need to stop all their mothers from being killed to end the kugelblitz which is impossible without a briefcase. Viktor asks about a plan B, something Five seems to have somewhat started thinking of already.

Diego and Stan are bringing Klaus down to the lobby where Diego explains that his siblings will likely understand this was an accident. No matter what, though, he has his son’s back.

As they are riding the elevator down, Klaus returns to the land of the living, freaking out his brother and nephew. They all return to their family where they are caught up about the world ending.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 5: Emotions get the better of Allison

Meanwhile, at The Sparrow Academy, Ben and Fei are butting heads since Ben is focusing on Harlan while Fei is more worried about the kugelblitz in their basement. Ben gives in and uses Grace’s robotic eye to try and see what is on the other side.

As this happens, a “kugel wave” unleashes that clears out the non-Umbrella guests in the hotel’s lobby. Klaus then explains how he saw the kugelblitz when he was visiting dad, something that helps Five connect more dots for his plan.

Viktor walks away when Luther keeps bringing up turning over Harlan, and the rest of his family follows. When pressed about the gash on their cheek, Viktor continues to protect Harlan, but everyone is on board with sacrificing one life to save billions.

After Five talks about ethical triage and being forced to make the kindest cut, Viktor agrees to go with his family’s plan. When he goes upstairs to bring him down, however, Harlan convinces Viktor that there is still time for them to work together and stop all this.

Lila and Diego have Stanley clean up the mess in the White Buffalo suite, which brings them all together as a family. When the harpoon is pulled out, a secret door slightly opens.

When Stan leaves, Lila makes some sexy moves on Diego after seeing him being an amazing father. When Luther goes to check on Allison, he explains how he knows something is wrong with her.

Allison explains how she can’t keep losing people before trying to kiss Luther. He pulls away and says he has to go see Sloane.

This causes Allison to rumor her brother into staying and desiring her. After having immediate regrets, she yells “Stop!” and leaves the area.

Because of this, she comes across Viktor trying to sneak Harlan out. Allison immediately agrees to help her brother and take him to safety.

When Viktor reunites with his family, they scold him and talk down to him for letting Harlan go and putting them all in danger.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 5: Five finds a family friend

Five and Klaus go to the bar to drink their sorrows where they both talk aimlessly about their existential crises. While Klaus is talking about his connection to the afterlife, Five is worrying about his older self telling him not to save the world.

When Five shows Klaus the tattoo he found on his older self, Klaus points out to his much brother older it is the symbol of the Mothers of Agony. Something that leads to Five teleporting out of there.

The episode comes to a close with Luther visiting Sloane again, the mysterious door in the White Buffalo Suite opening more, and Klaus reflecting on his body healing itself. Finally, Five arrives and walks through the bar where the Mothers of Agony hang out.

Eventually, he walks right into the Members Only room to find the once sophisticated simian Pogo is now a member of a biker gang where he administers the tattoos.
