The penultimate episode of The Umbrella Academy season 3 begins with a flashback to Luther back when he was on the moon. It starts with day 47 with a chipper and happy Luther but as the days go on, he becomes more and more annoyed and depressed.

Day 972 comes around and Luther has lost all of that spark he had. He tries going for a drive but is restricted by Reginald’s barriers.

Although Luther gives up and sits at this barrier, audiences are able to see a cryogenic chamber holding a deceased woman named Abigail Hargreeves in it.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 9: Five tries to remember

The morning after Luther and Sloane’s wedding, Ben wakes up on top of one of the hotel’s pool tables with Klaus waking up on the ground underneath. Almost immediately after he wakes up, Ben reverts back to his grumpy mean self, but Klaus knows it is not the real Ben.

After seeing Reginald confirm a plan with an unknown person last night, Five wakes up extremely hungover. After some thinking and mental exercises, he is able to remember this important mystery about his father.

Viktor wakes up in his bed to see Reginald standing over him with a tray of breakfast. Since he was sober last night, he noticed Viktor and Allison arguing and wanted to give some advice.

The two improve their obscure relationship before Reginald starts talking about saving the world.

Freshly married, Luther and Sloane wake up happily in love. Sloane begins asking about their dad, but Luther is upset.

Allison comes in because as she is making the rounds with apologies, the last of which will be Viktor. Luther forgives her but gets upset again when Allison informs him of a family meeting with dad at noon.

Sloane agrees to be there for both of them and keeps her husband calm as he is worried about Reginald’s ulterior motives. Outside on the street, Five is literally sitting at the edge of the world when Reginald tries to come in and give his speech.

After Reginald remarks on Five not listening to him when he was actually a kid, something that got him lost in time for over four decades, Five agrees.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 9: One last plea and vote

At the meeting, Reginald tells tales of the same myth where the world is ending but if seven bells are rung, then it will be saved. This was installed by whoever or whatever built time and space so there could be a backdoor to fix it all.

This backdoor is the passageway in the White Buffalo Suite. While listening, Five is still unable to remember who his dad was talking to.

Reginald concludes by saying this mission is perilous because of the Guardian. This is the being that used his sword to slice off Diego’s fingers.

Everyone agrees to take an hour to discuss and think about it. Privately, Lila is upset that Diego spoke for her and volunteered her to stay back.

He is worried about their baby but Lila is a fighter, so she is going. Allison finally catches up with Viktor and explains she was taking her pain out on him which was unfair.

She rightfully apologizes. Since this is the only way to save the universe and bring some sort of certainty back to their life, Allison is able to use this to convince her brother of the plan.

Five goes to Luther to try and talk his thoughts out regarding Reginald, the deal he saw last night, and if he wants to go on this mission. Luther and Sloane have decided to stay back and throw an end-of-the-world party.

All of this thinking out loud confirms Five’s suspicions this is a trap. When it comes time to vote, the no’s have it at a 5-4 vote, which means they are all staying.

Reginald apologizes for failing them now and in their prior lives, a bold statement that shocks the Umbrellas. As she returns to her room after losing the vote, Allison bursts into tears, realizing the world is over.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode 9: Reginald’s true colors

As Luther is getting ice for his party, he finds Reginald moping in the White Buffalo Suite. He goes to check on his father and explain why he did what he did.

Reginald understands and apologizes again, with Luther forgiving him. Reginald reflects how this conversation has unfortunate timing.

Before Luther can get an answer as to why this was poor timing, Reginald uses one of his alien tentacles to stab the newlywed before slicing his chest open and killing him. The murderous alien explains a funeral will have to bring everyone together since a wedding did not.

Viktor is walking around the hotel when he finds Five retracing his steps since he knows Reginald is hiding something. Viktor explains how Allison has been acting weird too as well as pro-dad.

This is all Five needs to remember Allison was the one Reggie was talking to last night. Before Five can come up with a plan to confront their sister, he and Viktor hear screaming coming from the White Buffalo Suite.

Everyone has entered the room to find a lifeless Luther in Sloane’s lap. The last one to arrive is Reginald, a move that Five is skeptical about.

The door to the passageway is ajar so everyone is quick to assume that this slice on Luther’s chest was done by the Guardian and his sword. Before they can truly mourn the fallen Luther, the kugelblitz begins swallowing the hotel.

Reginald hurries everyone into the portal. Klaus makes sure everyone is following their dad’s plan, so he is the last one to enter.

But before he can go through the passageway, Reginald states he is no longer necessary and pushes him down before locking the portal. The episode ends with Klaus trying to kill himself to enter the afterlife as the kugelblitz finishes swallowing the universe.
