On Ms. Marvel season 1 episode 4 titled “Seeing Red”, Kamala and her mother arrive in Karachi, Pakistan but they are not the only ones. Kamala meets a mysterious young man and winds up getting trapped back in time at the Karachi train station.

Will she be able to return home? Will Kamala finally find the answers she’s looking for?

Let’s find out!

Kamala and her mother arrive to Karachi, Pakistan to a warm welcome from Kamala’s cousins and grandmother. Upon arriving at her grandmother’s large home, Kamala finds a room full of paintings, artwork, and interesting items.

Her grandmother finds her curious granddaughter and talks about the hardships of the India-Pakistan Partition as she resorts to painting things she remembers. This includes a painting of her mother Aisha.

Kamala is surprised to hear her grandmother not only knows that they are Djinn but acts so casual about it. She doesn’t see it as anything to be surprised or horrified by.

She proudly accepts it as part of their genetics. Unfortunately, she cannot help Kamala more, instructing her that the bracelet will guide her.

Kamala is understandably overwhelmed. During her stay, she and her mother enjoy the sights and culture of Karachi from fine dining to the market.

While there Kamala feels a little out of place but eventually finds the train station. A section has been closed due to construction to preserve it but that doesn’t stop Ms. Marvel from wearing her mask (Bruno made and gifted her before her travels) and exploring.

However, Kamala isn’t able to explore for long when a stranger appears.

A young man wearing a red bandana over his mouth attacks her and the two fight before finding common ground. This is Kareem, who sensed her powers and takes her to The Red Daggers hideout.

There she also meets Waleed who explains more about the Noor Dimension and how if Najma is able to open the portal, Noor will devour our world. Kamala spends some time with Kareem and his friends while also training to use her powers.

In the meantime, her mother and grandmother spend quality time to establish why their relationship is strained. It seems Kamala’s mother did not believe all the stories and theories from her mother.

She left and came to America where realistic goals and achievements are possible. The progress Kamala has been making in her training is interrupted when Najma and her group attack!

They managed to escape custody and after leaving Kamran behind (due to his allegiance to Kamala) are still attempting to retrieve the bracelet. Kamala and Kareem are able to escape however Waleed is killed in the process.

Just when Kamala is barely able to hold her own against Najma, her bracelet is struck and suddenly Kamala is brought back in time.

Kamala finds herself surrounded by countless people; families, children, fleeing Karachi. Kamala is brought back to the Partition, standing at the Karachi train station where the innocent civilians are hoping to flee.

None seem to notice her as she tries to recognize a single face, resorting to climbing a top of one of the trains. We know that this is the moment in time when Aisha was last seen.

A truly bone chilling shot of this chaotic and heartbreaking scene brings the episode to a close.

Ms. Marvel Season 1 Episode 4 review

This is the first episode of Ms. Marvel that felt somehow like a slowdown instead of progression. While Kamala got to visit family, learn more of the hardships of the Partition and even got to meet new faces, it somehow feels as though the story hit a wall.

It could be because we are constantly meeting new people that we barely get to know before the show establishes if they are good or bad. This leaves no room for audiences to gage whether or not they will be helping Kamala.

Kamala doesn’t truly spend a lot of time with Kareem or Waleed before they are attacked by Najma and her group. Kamala still doesn’t have a lot of answers and we as the audience, still don’t know where the bracelet exactly came from or where the other one might be.

The ending of the episode was truly a work of art in itself. Placing Kamala amongst the innocent civilians trying to flee with their families and with such minimal possessions to carry was heartbreaking.

You know watching this scene that there is no way all of these people are going to be able to escape in time. There is no way all of them will able to make the last train.

We are hoping episode 5 will pick up with this scene and finally reveal what happened to Aisha. There are two episodes left, a lot of ground needs to be covered and we’re wondering how this will all tie into the upcoming 2023 Marvel Studios film The Marvels.
