Like the episode before, and presumably like the episodes to follow, this episode of Resident Evil flashes back and forth from the present day to fourteen years in the future after the viral apocalypse has taken place. For the purposes of this recap, we will address the 2022 storyline first and then move into the future.

Resident Evil Season 1 Episode 2 recap – 2022

2022: So, the dog didn’t kill Billie. The end of the last episode left sisters Billie and Jade trapped in the Umbrella lab with alarms going off, and Billie lying unresponsive on the floor after having been attacked by a giant mutant dog.

This episode picks up one second later with Billie pulling through, even with having lost a lot of blood. Then Albert shows up.

The father of the two girls seemingly woke up in the night, realized the two girls were missing, and that his badge to access the lab was missing as well. Naturally, he put two and two together.

He got to the lab before security was able to respond to the alarms going off. After a quick investigation of the dog bite, Albert sends Jade and Billie home, instructing them to not go to the hospital as he will take care of the mess at the lab.

The girls leave out of the back entrance and make it safely home. Note that security has still not arrived.

Once the girls are gone, Albert installs a virus that wipes every computer in the lab, erasing research and security footage and yet security has still not arrived. He then goes back to the dog corpse that was left in the hallway and begins to rub the dog’s blood all over his face and clothing.

But security has still not arrived. Albert then gets into position, creating a scene that would suggest that he was the one who was attacked by and then killed the dog.

Once his scene has been entirely set up and Albert is ready to go, security shows up to investigate the alarm that has been going off the entire time. Albert’s story is that Umbrella was hit with a cyber-attack, erasing all the computers, and the attack broke the lock on the cage, releasing the dog that he had to kill.

Evelyn Marcus, the CEO of Umbrella shows up, and while she buys Albert’s version of events, she wants to focus on his concern that their main pharmaceutical product, Joy, isn’t ready yet.

Resident Evil Season 1 Episode 2 recap – Billie’s Blood

A lot of references are made to a very shady past the two of them share. Meanwhile, back at the house, Albert draws some of Billie’s blood for testing and injects it into a rat.

He also injects some more of Billie’s blood into himself, though that seems to be blood that was drawn from her before the dog bite. Jade turns her attention to the mysterious Tijuana video that she saw in the lab.

She looks around on the internet and finds a website that proclaims to tell the dark truth about the Umbrella cooperation. But wouldn’t you know it, that particular website is blocked by the Umbrella firewall.

Fortunately, one of Jade’s classmates happens to be an expert at getting around firewalls. He helps her bypass security and contact the website administrator who is in charge of the truth about Umbrella website.

Jade has a brief conversation with the website admin, a blacklisted reporter, who gives her all the details of incidents connected to Umbrella that play out like a standard prologue to a zombie movie. The reporter does discover that her last name is Wesker, a name he seems to be familiar with.

Back at the house, Billie is feeling better enough to take the dog for a walk, even though the dog suddenly seems to hate her and tries to get away from her. The dog escapes her leash, and when a passerby picks up the dog, it does everything in its power to keep from being handed over to Billie.

The passerby takes all this information and understandably comes to the conclusion that this dog might not belong to this girl that he seems to hate so much. He suggests that Billie offer some proof of ownership (like a picture on her phone) or they can sort it out at the animal shelter.

Billie instead chooses the third option of punching the man in the face and taking the dog back. An unusually aggressive move for a character we just watch lose two schoolyard fights in the previous episode.

As further foreshadowing, the rat who had been injected with Billie’s blood, is also growing more aggressive, throwing itself against the cage and ominously cracking the glass.

Resident Evil Season 1 Episode 2 recap – Meanwhile, back in the future…

2036: So, the fall doesn’t kill Jade. Despite the several meter drop that Jade went through leaping off of the top of the stronghold, she manages to make it safely to the ground.

She climbs on top of a fleeing vehicle being driven by one of the scavengers trying to escape the massacre from the Umbrella attack. Once they’re far enough away from Umbrella, the scavenger pulls a gun on Jade, saying that anybody that Umbrella wants that badly, he doesn’t want to get killed for helping.

Jade tries to reason with him, promising that if he helps her, she can prevent him from getting killed by Umbrella. She’s partially right, because he’s killed a few minutes later.

But it’s by a horde of Zeroes that attack, not Umbrella. Jade gets away from the Zeroes by taking the car.

In an attempt to organize an escape plan, Jade seeks out Barry, the man who helped traffic her into England, but finds him not at home. Instead, she meets Melinda, Barry’s wife, and the couple’s dozens of cats.

As Jade waits for Barry to return, a noise coming from the bathroom catches her attention. It seemed that he had already returned home quite some time ago, with a bite from a zero, and had handcuffed himself to a pipe in the bathroom.

Melinda had apparently been keeping a now fully infected Barry in the bathroom for weeks, feeding him a steady diet of cats. With Barry now less than helpful for Jade’s escape plan, she has to get the information from his files.

These are files that he always kept on his person, and are still there, in his pocket. Jade suits up with some makeshift armor constructed from household items and goes into the bathroom to retrieve a new name of someone who can get her out of England.

She manages to get the paper from Barry’s pocket, but in the ensuing scuffle, one of his infected hands tears off, freeing him from the handcuffs. He attacks Melinda, forcing Jade to kill Barry.

As a result, a distraught Melinda kicks her out of her house. With the name of Barry’s contact in hand, Jade makes her way to a pub where she meets Charon.

She name-drops Barry in hopes of getting a spot on the ferry off of the island. The plan backfires, as Charon is mad at Barry for failing to deliver on a shipment of goods (probably because he was handcuffed in his bathroom) and refuses to help.

He adds that any friend of Barry will have to pay double, when Jade can’t even afford his standard rate. Unable to pay, she steals a token from a drunk passenger-to-be and slips into the crowd to board the ferry.

Meanwhile, Baxter catches up to Melinda and gets enough information to track down where Jade is headed. As the ferry arrives to pick up Jade and the other passengers, a drone opens fire, killing the trafficker and several passengers.

She once again flees with Baxter hot on her heels as the episode closes.
