Veruca and Klaus’s mission is more thoroughly explained as Wandering Blade and Po try to prepare for their next battle with the weasels on Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight season 1 episode 8 titled, “A Thread in the Dark”. Will Po and Wandering Blade be successful in capturing the sinister siblings or have their problems gotten worse?

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 1 Episode 8 recap – Veruca’s Past

The core of the episode focuses on Veruca’s past, revealing that she was the Queen’s arch mage. Veruca was able to use her powers of controlling vines and trees under the light of the full moon.

As the Queen seeks a special potion, she tells her arch mage that she will be seeking Alfred’s advice as he will be her advisor. Veruca isn’t thrilled and before we know it, she is being arrested for Alfred’s murder.

Veruca is thrown in a cell where one lone weed has taken root in the floor. As she tries to use her magic in the moonlight the window to her prison cell is blocked.

For 15 years she is locked away before Klaus rescues her. But by then, she feels her connection to the Earth and the full moon to be severed.

On top of that they are the last mages. This distresses Veruca in the present as she cannot heal Klaus who keeps losing consciousness from his wound.

Luckily, she spots a dog picking mushrooms and orders her to take them to her secret village that she accidentally admits exists. At the village, full of females, the high priestess allows them to stay and offers to help.

Klaus is healed however both he and Veruca are drugged and meant to be sacrificed to this supposed spirit/goddess the village worships. When Klaus is taken first, Veruca tries to use her magic again and as luck would have it, that evening is a full moon.

With her connection returned, Veruca wreaks havoc on the village with her powers and then the gauntlet.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 1 Episode 8 recap – Victory

Meanwhile Wandering Blade and Po know it’s only a matter of time before they will have to face Klaus and Veruca again. Using a tree trunk as the gauntlet, they practice trying to take the “gauntlet” from each other.

The trouble is Po is able to do this repeatedly by using his own skills and not Wandering Blade’s methods which frustrates her. She has been waiting 15 years to capture the weasel siblings and doesn’t want to fail.

Po tries to reassure Wandering Blade as Veruca uses the gauntlet. Po and Wandering Blade meet Veruca and Klaus and thanks to Po’s methods, Wandering Blade is able to subdue them both.

By now it is dawn and Veruca can no longer use her powers but that doesn’t upset her. She’ll just wait for the next full moon.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 1 Episode 8 review

This honestly was my favorite episode of the series thus far! I liked Klaus and Veruca from the first episode alone and now I have a wider scope of their past.

I’m sure there is more to the reason why Veruca killed Alfred but for now I am content with the backstory we’ve been given. I appreciated that Veruca got an actual backstory, one that goes deep into her gifts, intelligence and how being in prison for 15 years did more damage than perhaps anyone could have expected.

She is always depicted as the dumb one, but that may both be due to her imprisonment and a way to trick her enemies. I thoroughly enjoyed how Po’s and Wandering Blade’s different fighting tactics were shown and that Po’s wound up being the right choice of action in capturing the siblings.

I don’t expect Klaus and Veruca to be captured for long, but I will accept this minor victory! I’d like to add that the more I watch this Netflix series, the more I am assuming there will have to be a second season in the future!
