After this adaption was in production hell since the 1990s, Neil Gaiman’s iconic series is finally being adapted for the motion picture medium. One 2019 deal with Netflix later, audiences are closer than ever to watching The Sandman season 1.

Originally The Sandman was going to be a movie, but in 2010 DC Entertainment changed the adaption’s focus from film to episodic series. Gaiman is no stranger to his works being adapted (American Gods, Lucifer, Good Omens) so it is no surprise to see him attached to the writing and development process for this anticipated series.

This adaption in particular has been long awaited by readers since it is often compared to Watchmen as one of the best of the medium. With Gaiman in the writer’s room is longtime, Warner Bros. writer David S. Goyer and the author of the original Young Avengers comic series, Allan Heinberg.

The blending of these three writers has the potential to build upon the incredible legacy of this classic comic book series. Let’s take a look at The Sandman season 1 trailer and what audiences can expect from the show!

Check out the trailer below that was released as a part of San Diego Comic-Con this year!

The Sandman season 1 cast

Helming the cast and playing the main character will be Tom Sturridge. This character does go by The Sandman but he may also go by Dream or Morpheus.

Gwendoline Christie will be playing Lucifer Morningstar, the ruler of Hell who will have nothing to do with the Tom Ellis’ adaption of Neil Gaiman’s 2016 show Lucifer. The cast is made up of other big names like Charles Dance, David Thewlis, Joely Richardson, and Stephen Fry, along with Patton Oswalt and Mark Hamill lending voice roles.

There are also up-and-coming names like Boyd Holbrook, and Jenna Coleman. The rest of the cast does not have the household name power of the above names but if and when this show takes off, there is a good chance they will be.

We’re talking about names like Vivienne Acheampong, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park, Donna Preston, and so many more.

The Sandman season 1 plot

According to Netflix, this series’ premise is as follows:

"When Dream is captured by occultists seeking immortality, his absence causes chaos in both the Dreaming and the waking world. Finally free after 105 years, Dream must recover the power that was stolen from him and try to put things right. That journey takes him around the world and into the depths of hell as he deals with wizards, demons, rogue nightmares and his complicated family."

Dream/Morpheus/The Sandman might be the main character, but the world he is in (the world that Neil Gaiman helped create back in 1989), has the potential to be the true beauty of this show.
