Tales of The Walking Dead season 1, episode 1 recap: Evie/Joe
The first episode of Tales of The Walking Dead season 1 has arrived introducing viewers to Joe and Evie. Both are ready to take a risk for someone they care about, but will it be worth it in the end?
Tales of The Walking Dead Season 1 Episode 1 recap – Joe
The episode begins with Joe in a sequence of scenes very reminiscent of the film I Am Legend (2007). Joe has a daily routine in his bunker, which includes watching pre-recorded football games, working out and taking care of his dog Gilligan.
This being The Walking Dead Universe, it doesn’t take long for Gilligan to tragically die at the hands of walkers leaving Joe lonely and heartbroken. Again, like I Am Legend.
He grows tired of the same routine and decides to reread messages he exchanged with a woman online. Together they discuss their lives, how they are prepping for the end times, but they never formally met.
He decides to leave the safety of his bunker and drive to her home. On the way his motorcycle tires meet a spike strip and after resorting to traveling on foot, he gets caught in one of Evie’s traps.
Tales of The Walking Dead Season 1 Episode 1 recap – Evie
Evie is a prepper too but takes a rather Earth-bound/hippie approach. Using a handgun, she orders Joe to take her to meet her estranged husband.
Having no choice, Joe drives them, often handcuffed with no way of escape. Throughout their journey they open up more to each other.
Evie’s very carefree and appreciates the beauty that still exists in such an isolated world. Her husband would often paint the portraits of the people he hated as a way of releasing stress.
She fears that he painted her portrait. Joe tells Evie about this woman he hasn’t met and how his life literally passed him by.
After making a pitstop at what appears to be Terminus (before or after it fell?) they get their motorcycle stolen and receive a lamb as payment. The two follow train tracks and argue before going their separate ways.
Tales of The Walking Dead Season 1 Episode 1 recap – A happy ending?
Evie finds her husband’s cabin full of paintings. He’s not there but she discovers his paintings, which does include one of her but painted with love.
She is happy to be reassured that he always loved her. Joe finds the home of the woman and after being spotted on cameras and almost killed by walkers, a latch is opened, and an underground bunker is revealed.
He meets the woman, who calls herself Sandra. The two seem to hit it off awkwardly well until something changes.
After eating a brownie Sandra drugged, she reveals her true nature. Like out of a horror film, she messily puts on makeup and threatens to kill Joe if he doesn’t tell her the truth as to why he came searching for her.
Joe is telling her the truth but the time she spent alone and dealing with others who tried to break in made her paranoid and violent. In fact, she’s stolen a watch from everyone who did successfully get inside which means they are probably dead.
Thankfully Joe is spared when Sandra’s cameras go off alerting her to Evie and the lamb outside. After she tries and fails to drug Evie, she helps Joe escape, and he kills Sandra in a rather violent way.
Someone on the team must have really wanted to emphasis the blood that just oozes out of her as she dies. The duo manages to escape her bunker, leaving walker Sandra behind and the two decide to continue traveling together.
Tales of The Walking Dead Season 1 Episode 1 review
As a first episode, it was interesting and sets a different tone than other stories we’ve seen in The Walking Dead Universe. I was actually pleasantly surprised to see both Joe and Evie survive as not everyone will be so lucky.
They do wind up somewhere in or near Ohio which makes me wonder if they will come across The Commonwealth. We don’t know when in the apocalypse timeline this episode takes place, but we can tell it’s at least been several years.
The episode embodied both the horrors and blessing the apocalypse seems to create as Sandra changed for the worst while people like Evie remained their best. Will we see them again?
