The season one finale begins exactly where episode nine left off, The Corinthian killed the collector Fun Land stopping him from hurting Rose and Jed. The nightmare explains he saved the kids from Morpheus.
This statement startles Rose so she talks to The Corinthian away from Jed. She correctly infers who The Corinthian is, as he explains how Dream will kill her now that she is breaking the walls down between the Dreaming and Waking World.
The Sandman season 1 episode 10: The Corinthian gives his speech
This puts some fear in Rose which is increased when there is a knocking on the hotel room door. The Corinthian goes to answer the door and it is The Good Doctor.
She checks on him since his keynote speech is soon. The two explain how her impersonator and Jed problem have been handled.
In the room, Rose says she is taking Jed and leaving but The Corinthian warns her about wandering the hotel or leaving since Dream’s raven could find her. Leaving for an hour, the last Arcana gives Rose both hotel room keys and lets her make the choice if she wants to stay or go.
During his keynote speech, The Corinthian talks about their shared love of killing. He concludes this by having them all close their eyes and visualize their greatness.
As this goes on, Dream makes himself visible to his last escaped Arcana.
The King of Dreams approaches the nightmare while talking about how disappointed he is in The Corinthian and all of the other collectors. He is disappointed in his creation for infecting these mortals with his love of killing.
When he tries to use his sand against The Corinthian to stop him, Lord Morpheus is stabbed in the hand. Dream asks how this is possible, to which the Arcana explains Rose’s power and status at the center of the Dreaming is going on as they speak.
The Sandman season 1 episode 10: Lord Morpheus confronts The Corinthian
While this goes on, the audience sees Rose and Jed go through the hotel until they come across the shared dream of every collector at the convention. They try to escape and run into Lord Morpheus in the dream who tries to get Rose to wake up.
The Corinthian appears and counters this directive for Rose by telling the young woman she is the one in control, not Dream. These two diametrically opposed men are trying to convince Rose to do what they want but she states she is going to find her own way.
Rose puts the walls back up between the dreams and delays the Dreaming from collapsing in on itself and taking the Waking World with it. With a proud Dream looking on, Rose ends the dream without falling under The Corinthian’s lies.
Returning to the Waking World and in the function room, Dream has healed his hand wound and regained his strength. Since he created The Corinthian poorly, he must deconstruct this nightmare and does exactly that.
Dream then turns to the collectors and removes their dream of being a successful serial killer. He just leaves them with their own grief, pain, and guilt until their last day.
The Sandman season 1 episode 10: Lyta goes into labor
Rose and Jed drive off from the hotel with Dream not sending Matthew after them since nothing can happen until Rose falls asleep. On their drive, she explains how their mom passed a few months ago and mentions their great-grandmother Unity.
Lyta calls and tells Rose she is in labor at the hospital. The siblings eventually arrive, and all of their B&B housemates are there in the waiting area.
They all do well in comforting Rose with the newlyweds having some issues as the husband acts flirty with a nurse. Aside from everyone, Rose calls Unity and asks her if Jed could live with her if anything were to happen.
Unity explains how she had the idea of Jed and Rose coming to live with her and be a family; something Rose loves the sound of. When she returns to the group, the nurse comes to bring her into the room with Lyta.
There, Rose explains her situation as the vortex and how something might happen to her once she goes to sleep. Lyta tells her that she must stop Dream by any means.
The Sandman season 1 episode 10: Rose creates a dream vortex
That night, Rose hops between the dreams of her housemates until they all are sharing the same dream. When they all blend into one, a literal vortex opens up and swallows all of Rose’s friends with Jed being the last one.
Dream arrives and says everything so far can be undone by him but states nobody is safe until the vortex is dead. Across the pond, Unity is having a dream of her own and appears in the Dreaming’s library.
Here, she is greeted by Lucienne who eventually discovers who this mortal is and her relation to Rose.
Before Dream can take any action, Fiddler’s Green appears and tries to give up himself so that Rose may live. Lord Morpheus explains how this is not possible since it must be the vortex.
Rose asks why vortexes even exist and Dream does not have an answer, but his Dream does. Fiddler’s Green shares his theory that if a human is at the center of the Dreaming, it reminds the Dreams and Nightmares of who they are supposed to serve.
Following this share, Fiddler’s Green returns to his post at a beautiful location with rolling meadows and endless trees.
The Sandman season 1 episode 10: The truth about the dream vortex is revealed
Dream states that he must do what he has to. Before he can kill Rose, Unity and Lucienne arrive.
They inform Dream that Unity was supposed to be the vortex before she fell under the sleepy sickness. Unity instructs her great-granddaughter to give her what makes her the vortex.
Rose does this and fulfills her role as this age’s dream vortex. Following this, Unity destroys the vortex and takes her own life in the process.
She explains how grateful she was to meet her golden-eyed man who gave her the baby that would lead to Rose being born. The detail of a golden-eyed man puts some worry in the eyes of Dream and Lucienne since Dream’s mischievous sibling Desire has golden eyes.
In the morning, Rose wakes up to a text from Lyta announcing the birth of her baby boy. Rose and Jed visit this new life.
Rose and Lyta agree to go through this together. Back in the waiting room, Rose explains how they are going back to New Jersey in the morning.
This, along with his dream last night, convinces Hal to move back to New York and try again.
The Sandman season 1 episode 10: Dream confronts his sibling
Dream goes to confront Desire for their part in the dream vortex. Dream warns his sibling to not cross him again or he will forget they are siblings.
The Dream Lord alludes to the division within the Endless, with Death and Destiny on his side, but Despair and Delirium on the side of Desire. With this threat, Dream returns to his palace to begin building some dreams.
One of them is Gault, rebuilding her as a dream as she wished. When she asked why, Dream gives credit to Lucienne and herself for reminding him how the world changed while he was imprisoned.
Gault flies off and The Sandman asks Lucienne to hold onto The Corinthian’s artifact, since the world is not ready for another one just yet. Before she goes, however, Dream asks her to take charge while he works.
Lucienne happily accepts.
The episode ends in Hell with Lucifer Morningstar being approached by the demon Lord Azazel. He is here to speak on behalf of the Lords of Hell.
He explains to the king of Hell that the armies of the damned are at her disposal to take on their mutual enemy of Dream. With this information from her generals, Lucifer explains to Mazikeen that she is going to do something that will make God livid and bring Morpheus to his knees.
