Why we need more character backstories on Tales of The Walking Dead

Tales of The Walking Dead is one of many spinoffs based on The Walking Dead. Only three of the six episodes have been released on AMC and already we’re noticing a pattern.

The spinoff spent two episodes on characters we haven’t seen yet and one episode on characters we know quite well. Guess what?

The episode with characters we already know, was better, by a long shot. This could be because writers and showrunners have more to work with.

After all, in season 1 episode 3 “Dee” we know that Dee is going to become Alpha. We know the cruelty and violence she is capable of.

Why Tales of The Walking Dead season 1 episode 3 “Dee” worked so well.

We know the kind of young woman Lydia was and has become. And yes, we all know what Negan does in order to kill her.

But at the same time, whether you like her or not, you are invested, interested and intrigued by this episode which focuses on her and her daughter. The backstory of her time spent with Brooke and her small group on the boat was actually riveting.

We see a side of Dee that shows there is still some form of humanity left in her before it disappears completely when she becomes Alpha. We see Lydia, even as a child, not trusting her mother.

At times, we almost see her talking back and showing she’s intelligent for her age. All of that we don’t really get from episodes 1 and 2.

Episode 1 “Evie/Joe” really doesn’t get deep. It was different to see both Joe and Evie have two different kinds of prepping styles, and both still manage to survive.

Their reasons for their actions are strong enough to get behind but at the same time something felt lacking. The twist of Joe’s online friend turning out to be a psycho due to her living alone and having break-ins was unexpected but random.

Episode 2 “Blair/Gina” was just too far-fetched and strange for a Walking Dead episode. At least when characters hallucinated on The Walking Dead it was believable.

Their hallucinations came from blood loss, probable concussion, moments before dying or just mental breakdowns. But this…time loop that kept repeating for a rather unclear reason was just not the way to go.

If Tales of The Walking Dead gets greenlit for a season 2 there needs to be more backstories of characters, we already know. Maybe we can see what happened to Georgie and the twins?

Maybe see the life The Governor talked to Rick about before the apocalypse. Or how he founded Woodbury?

Am I the only one that wants to see what Terminus was like before they became cannibals? If the spinoff intends to keep using new characters, then perhaps give us people that we’d like to see in a story that doesn’t feel cheap and or used for horror and suspense thrills.
