The episode starts with a flashback of Lissa walking away from the car accident and kneeling next to what appears to be someone else’s body. Then her brother Andre tells her to remember.
Rose then wakes up, showing that it was all a dream she was having. The focus then turns to Lissa, who is with Victor and Mia.
She will learn from Mia about all the other heads of families and has to go through a Specialization Ceremony. Lissa asks Mia what happened when her sister didn’t specialize and why the Council stopped insisting that she try to do it.
Vampire Academy season 1 episode 2: The consequences of their actions
Mia tells Lissa that by the time the Council was done with her sister, she wouldn’t have been able to use her abilities if she did specialize. Meanwhile, Rose is doing chores and talking to Mason.
She wonders how Lissa could become Queen since she’s the least political person in the Dominion. Mason suggests that Lissa might like the idea, but Rose doubts it.
Mason asks if Rose wants a distraction from her current mood; she agrees, and they kiss. Meanwhile, Christian is in class getting taunted by Jesse about his parents turning Strigoi.
According to Jesse, there are three ways for a Moroi to turn into a Strigoi; either they get fed a Strigoi’s blood, accidentally kill when they feed or purposefully kill while feeding. Christian’s parents seem to have done the last option.
Rose asks Meredith Beckham to give Lissa a note, but she refuses and asks Rose if she knows any royal Moroi in high positions with Dhampir best friends. One of Rose’s teachers comes up to her and says there’s going to be a tribunal about her and Lissa sneaking out.
They will decide whether or not Rose has a future as a guardian. Lissa opens the door of her room to find Dimitri waiting for her, and he tells her that she can’t see Rose.
Vampire Academy season 1 episode 2: All the elements
Lissa heads to the library, where she sees Sonya Karp, Victor’s daughter, talking to a guardian named Mikhail Tanner. She meets Christian and tells him she doesn’t think she’ll specialize at her ceremony.
She adds that when Sonya didn’t specialize, she was sent to the high priestess, counseling, then electric shock therapy. Sonya, unlike Lissa, isn’t royal, and she is worried about what the Council will do to her if she doesn’t specialize too.
Christian says he thinks he can help Lissa, to which she responds that is why she came looking for him. Dimitri and Rose argue about her upcoming tribunal.
Dimitri says that he doesn’t want her expelled but that she put Lissa in danger and is too stubborn to see sense. Rose asks him if the idea of her going to the Communes doesn’t give him a thrill.
He tells her his mother and sisters are there and that it isn’t a life he would wish on her. Rose says that until they decide to kick her out officially, she has to climb the leaderboard.
So, she challenges Meredith to a fight. Meanwhile, Lissa practices fire magic with Christian.
She says she can do all the magic Moroi are supposed to do, but one element isn’t presenting itself as stronger than the others.
Vampire Academy season 1 episode 2: Magic and fighting
Christian tells Lissa there is magic inside her, inviting her to dance; she just has to say yes. They begin practicing with all of the elements while Rose fights Meredith.
Rose defeats her, despite being able to feel what Lissa is feeling, and challenges Mason next. Dimitri warns Rose that she’s fighting like a Strigoi.
She tries to fight Dimitri, but he defeats her and makes her run as punishment. She tells him that she gets the point: don’t fight like a Strigoi.
Dimitri asks her why she did, and she responds by asking why he cares. He says that when Rose is back at number one and is taking his job, he’d rather not have Lissa protected by someone who can’t control herself.
He tells Rose that if she can’t keep it together in practice, how can she survive a real-world Strigoi attack? Rose replies that she will survive because that’s what she does because she’s strong.
The tribunal begins, and Mikhail tells Rose that she should live to fight another day. She thanks him and heads into the room.
Vampire Academy season 1 episode 2: Royal pains
While Rose is fighting to stay a guardian, Lissa has to deal with her problems. She hears other royals gossiping about her, saying that she won’t last and that not every Dragomir is fit for the throne.
Victor tells Lissa to ignore the gossip and that Andre and her parents would be as proud of her as he is. He also mentions that the Queen was around the same age when she took the throne and wasn’t interested in politics.
She just didn’t want people to fight. Lissa wonders what the Queen will see if she doesn’t specialize.
Victor asks what could go wrong and tells Lissa that he will get her out of the Dominion if necessary. She assures that everything is okay, and that she’ll see Victor out there.
Meanwhile, at the tribunal, Rose argues that she should continue at St. Vladimir’s because she keeps Lissa safe in every possible way. Rose senses Lissa’s worry and runs out of her tribunal to comfort her friend.
Lissa wonders if she’s the only thing standing in the way of the Dominion becoming a worse place. She also mentions her brother Andre’s legacy and how he would make the Dominion good not just for royal Moroi but for everyone, including the Dhampirs.
Rose tells her friend that if she wants to be the Queen, she should go out there and show everyone what she’s got.
Vampire Academy season 1 episode 2: Protection
Rose also promises Lissa that if she doesn’t specialize, she and Victor will get her out of the Dominion. After much encouragement from Rose, Lissa heads into her Specialization Ceremony.
It looks like she isn’t going to specialize until all of the bowls in front of her fill with fire. However, Lissa sees that result is due to Christian helping her.
She confronts him for making her a fraud. Christian responds that half the people there are frauds.
Lissa says that even those who want her as Queen would shun her if they knew she didn’t specialize in fire and that she doesn’t have any real magic. Christian says she’s nothing but magic and that he isn’t sorry.
Dimitri interrupts them, and Lissa thanks him and wonders how Rose managed to slip past him before. He responds that Victor told him that protection comes in many forms.
He also asks Lissa if anyone has told her what’s happening with Rose. Rose gets drunk in a bar with Mason and Meredith, with Dimitri observing her from afar.
Vampire Academy season 1 episode 2: Inside the future Queen’s head
Lissa talks to the Dean from Rose’s tribunal, pleading her best friend’s case. Meanwhile, Rose dances on a table in the bar.
On her way back from talking to the Dean, Lissa confronts Christian again. She asks him if he thinks she’s not strong enough to handle herself.
Christian says no, and they discuss why it would be a bad idea for them to be seen together. Then they kiss, and Rose passes out.
Dimitri carries Rose out of the bar and back to her room. Sonya and Mikhail meet again, and he tells her he wants to hang out with her and compliments her smile.
Rose wakes up to find Lissa there. Lissa says that the upside to being almost the Queen is that people have to listen to her.
Due to this, Rose gets to stay at St. Vladimir’s. Lissa also asks Rose how many shots she had at the bar, to which Rose replies that she didn’t pass out from drinking but from kissing.
Since Lissa was kissing Christian, Rose was kissing him too.
Vampire Academy season 1 episode 2: Bad dreams and even worse realities
Mia talks to Meredith while she’s waiting for Lissa. Meredith says she prefers fighting with words to training.
Lissa asks Rose if she’ll be able to sleep. Rose responds that she will if Andre gets out of her dreams.
She tells Lissa about the dream she’s been having where Lissa kneels next to a body, and Andre tells her to remember. Lissa reveals that the dream is hers.
Sonya tells Mikhail that the Strigoi are attacking in a pattern, at weak points like doors and gates. She thinks they’re planning something and trying to find a weakness in the magic.
Jesse arrives back at St. Vladimir’s and is almost attacked by a Strigoi. Luckily, a guardian tells him to go.
He gets back in his car, driving through the gates. The Strigoi is on top of Jesse’s car as plenty more of them climb up the gates.
Will Rose and Lissa figure out what is going on with their mysterious connection? What are the Strigoi planning?
