The AMC series The Walking Dead will be airing the final episodes beginning tonight, October 2. For years our heroes and anti-heroes, have faced all types of evil from the undead to other survivors.

They faced betrayals, traps, attacks, and hordes of walkers (zombies) arriving both in the middle of the day and in the dead of night. But what is truly the scariest thing about the series?

Looking back and reflecting on the story as a whole, the answer seemed pretty clear: people. What makes people scarier than walkers that will literally eat you alive?

The unpredictability. Walkers roam the post-apocalyptic world and can seemingly come out of nowhere.

You might be surprised by what the scariest aspect of The Walking Dead is.

They lurk in abandoned homes and empty fields during the night. They growl and reach for their prey from the ground, some buried under mud, others emerging from water.

But we know nearly everything about them. We know how to kill them, how they function, and how more are created (getting bitten or turning after death).

However, it is still people, other survivors who remain the scariest aspect of this phenomenal series. In the beginning it was difficult to watch a walker eat and kill someone on screen.

Especially when it’s someone we care for, like Dale from season 2. But when have I actually looked away from a character death (and still do to this day)?

How about when Sam is brutally murdered by Terminus members in the season 5 episode “No Sanctuary”? How about when Negan delivered the first blow to Abraham in the season 6 finale “Last Day on Earth”?

What about Hershel’s cruel demise at the hands of The Governor in season 4’s “Too Far Gone”? Yes, one cannot survive on their own in this walker-ridden world.

But it is equally as risky to seek help from others. We’ve seen what happens when someone unfortunately meets the likes of The Wolves or Terminus.

We’ve seen the rather unfair conditions of The Sanctuary and what happens if your group is led by the likes of The Governor? Sometimes you can wind up living with a safe and secure group for some time before it all falls apart.

As was the case with Michonne when she lost her son Andre and Maggie’s group who fell to The Reapers. It is simply the luck of the draw.

Will you meet Rick and his group and still survive every time the community was lost? Or will you meet the hands of another who won’t hesitate to rob and kill you?

The series plainly and unforgivingly reminds viewers how unpredictable the world can be when it comes to an end. So, we view it as, people are scarier than walkers.

Next. The last season premiere of The Walking Dead airs in one month. dark
