Oddballs season 1 episode 1 “Raising Toasty” sets the tone for what is sure to be one odd television show on Netflix. James and Max decide to create the first smart toaster to end the anarchy that is, burnt toast.

Oddballs Season 1 Episode 1 recap – Burnt Toast

James and Max (the talking crocodile), wake up after a successful sleepover indoors. But in order for it to be the best sleepover ever, they need the perfect breakfast, complete with toast.

However, when they use the toaster, the toast is burnt. Anarchy ensues!

James makes the acute observation that in a world where everything is basically a smart device, why hasn’t anyone made a smart toaster? Fed up with burnt toast, James decides to be the first to create a smart toaster.

Taking the microchip from the refrigerator, they place it inside the toaster and ta da Toasty is born!

Oddballs Season 1 Episode 1 recap – Toasty

Toasty would put The Brave Little Toaster to shame as this newborn, babbles and coos like an actual baby. Together James and Max decide to raise Toasty so that the perfect toast can be made.

The problem is they have very different parenting styles. James wants to be loving and supportive whereas Max wants to be scientific and cold.

After a series of montages, Toasty becomes mean and cruel due to James and Max arguing over their parenting styles. The baby toaster goes rogue and begins wreaking havoc all over the city!

It takes Max almost dying for he and James to reconcile their differences. As Toasty makes his way to the bread factory to obtain more bread ammo, James catches up and sings the baby toaster a song.

This calms Toasty down, but not entirely, resulting in James having to remove the microchip. Upon doing so, Toasty finally creates the perfect slice of toast that isn’t burnt.

Toasty has been tossed into the trash with the microchip. The microchip slides down the trash and into the toaster awakening Toasty once more!

Oddballs Season 1 Episode 1 review

I had absolutely no expectations before watching Oddballs. I am very familiar with James, TheOdd1sOut YouTube Channel for some time and I do find his videos to be very funny.

While I was unsure if his Netflix television show would come across just as funny, I was pleasantly surprised. Not every joke landed with me, however, I did laugh out loud several times.

The world of Oddballs reminds me a lot of The Amazing World of Gumball but for all the right reasons. You’ll have an everyday setting, such as a city where we see humans, humanoids, animals and other odd creatures living and thriving together.

Taking the simple idea of why we don’t have smart toasters and creating a character that literally stole my heart, to the point I actually got sad when James removes the microchip, is pretty amazing. Especially when most films and television shows lack any amount of creativity.

You sold me James, I will be watching and recapping the rest of your show!
