Derry Girls season 3 episode 4 has ghosts, creepy houses, and possibly romance. In “The Haunting”, the group finds themselves cleaning out Sister Michael’s dead aunt’s home while Erin’s family tries to contact Grandpa Joe’s wife.

Derry Girls Season 3 Episode 4 recap – The Haunted House

The group intends to complain to Sister Michael after a classmate had apparently stolen a song they wrote while on a retreat. But the topic quickly changes once Sister Michael receives a phone call that her aunt passed away.

The trouble is her aunt was quite the hoarder and Sister Michael does not feel like cleaning it up. She asks the group to do it for her.

Michelle immediately agrees noticing the potential for them to drink and be with boys without adult supervision. The group loads up a van and venture out to what seems to be the countryside.

Trouble is they seem to get lost and ask an old woman for directions. She speaks in a heavy Irish accent that no one can understand, while pointing ominously in the distance.

The group freaks out thinking it’s some kind of warning when the van gets a flat tire. As the group tries to resolve it, James gets accidentally hit by the van rolling in reverse.

The group panics and brings him into the house which thankfully isn’t far away. He comes to and tells the group how he saw a light.

They don’t take him seriously and begin looking around the house as a bad thunderstorm arrives. Immediately they feel as though the home is creepy and haunted.

They find a message on a mirror and hear odd noises they can’t explain. They decide to huddle together to stay vigilant that evening, but they fall asleep.

Derry Girls Season 3 Episode 4 recap – Erin and James

The next morning Erin wakes up before everyone else and looks at the items in the home, including that of an old black and white photo wedding photo. James follows soon after and takes the opportunity to tell Erin that he had always liked her.

His near-death experience and seeing the light made him realize how much he likes her. The two begin kissing when Michelle catches them and loses her mind.

She basically decrees that they cannot be together because if they break up, she will take James’ side and lose her best friend. Erin regrettably agrees with Michelle, but James claims he will wait for her.

Eventually Sister Michael makes it to the area in a DeLorean just as a strange man starts yelling at the group to leave his house. The group panics thinking he is a ghost.

Turns out he’s not a ghost and it is his home. He and his wife just started moving in.

The group entered the wrong house. Sister Michael clears up the misunderstanding with the man and they leave.

Derry Girls Season 3 Episode 4 recap – Ma

Erin’s family reflects the passing of Ma, Mary and Sarah’s mother, Grandpa Joe’s wife. It’s been years but they still miss her and wish they could speak with her.

They get the idea of visiting a psychic to communicate with her. And so that Grandpa Joe can find his razor.

The only skeptic is Gerry, but he comes along. They meet the psychic who seems to act like we’d expect.

He’s not very good at his job, very dramatic and possibly a fake. The group meets with him as he claims he thinks he found Ma.

As he’s trying to communicate with her, his own mother distracts him. Breaking his concentration, he claims he lost contact but takes the money anyway.

The family is disappointed but returns home. The following morning Grandpa Joe finds his razor under the sink cabinet.

He smiles, thinking his wife helped him find it.

Derry Girls Season 3 Episode 4 review

How the group winds up in these situations time and time again, I will never know. Outside of the humor, it was surprising but pleasing to see James and Erin fall for each other.

The series had hinted that there was something more between them through vague eye contact and moments. While they might not be dating now to avoid drama and Michelle’s rage, I’m willing to bet they will try again when the time is right.

James’ feelings for Erin won’t disappear overnight and we’re hoping they get their happy ending by the end of the series. The other heartwarming moment was the ending when Grandpa Joe finds his razor.

To think, he searched the home how many times, for how many years, never saw it and then he finally does, just as he’s been thinking of his deceased wife. Without saying it outright, the show is hinting that she was looking over him and the family and helped him find it.

We’ve all had a moment like that in our lives. The scene was the perfect way to end the episode and nearly made me cry.
