Netflix’s Oddballs season 1 episode 6 “Emo like the Wolfstank” returns to its original formula of testing while growing James and Max’s friendship. What happens when Max’s thing is suddenly James’ thing?

What happens when the idea of cheating threatens to destroy their bond? Let’s find out!

Oddballs Season 1 Episode 6 recap – Underarm Deodorant

The episode begins with Max and James in the Boy’s Locker Room at school. James is exhausted from trying and failing to find a club to join.

He doesn’t seem to have that one thing that makes him special. Max comments that James is beginning to smell so he hands him his underarm deodorant.

Instead of using it on his armpits, James rubs it on his face. This causes sweat to pour from his eyes.

Max and James go to class worried what their classmates will think. Assuming James is crying, class bully Stuart rubs it in that he got into Chess Club instead of him.

James defends himself which causes Stuart to leave the room and Mr. McFly to praise him! He asks if James would be interested in joining the Competitive Feeling Squad club, of which Max is already a member.

James is unsure at first, but Mr. McFly convinces him to check it out.

Oddballs Season 1 Episode 6 recap – Competitive Feeling Squad Competition

James arrives to see the team practicing when Mr. McFly asks him to show off his tears. James reapplies the deodorant, sweats and the group is amazed!

With James on the team, they think they will finally defeat their enemy! Smooth Jason is their number one enemy from the opposing team.

Portrayed very similarly to Tamaki Suoh from the anime Ouran High School Host Club (yes, I’ve seen it and I love it) Smooth Jason uses his good looks and anime skills to win year after year. The competition consists of several challenges that use emotions as weapons in battle.

Both James and Smooth Jason win several rounds with one to go. Throughout the competition Max has been angered by James, claiming he’s cheating and took away his one thing.

James argues that it’s not cheating since there is no rule against using deodorant. But when it comes to the final challenge, he admits his wrongdoing in order to save his friendship with Max.

The two forgive each other but unfortunately James is now disqualified. As Smooth Jason wins the trophy again, his flower falls from his jacket revealing it to be attached to an onion.

He becomes disqualified too.

Oddballs Season 1 Episode 6 recap – The real winner

With both competitors disqualified there is no winner. Mr. McFly goes on a screaming and crying tangent!

He’s lost year after year thanks to Smooth Jason. The constant loses finally made him lose it!

His display of raw emotion is enough to sway the competition and he wins for the team!

Oddballs Season 1 Episode 6 review

Who knew applying deodorant in a place that is not your armpits would create such an odd yet funny result? This episode honestly reminded me to mention in my review how the title of each episode barely gives away what is about to transpire.

This includes the episode title card artwork. When I read the title “Emo like the Wolfstank” I truly had no idea where this was going aside from perhaps James deciding to join an Emo group to see what all the fuss is about.

The concept of a Competitive Feeling Squad is something I probably would have never thought of myself. And yes, I did laugh out loud when Smooth Jason was revealed.

No one can withstand the smoldering and dramatic expressions of an anime character. Truly, Tamaki himself would have been most pleased by his performance.

This was probably the first episode that really tested James and Max’s friendship. Even though it is over something as ridiculous as cheating by using deodorant, it more so dives into the dramas of when friends outdo one another.

As close as friends can often be, they still have a thing or two that makes them feel special and different. But when your friend shares that same thing and is better at it than you, cheating or not, it can create a problem.

The important thing to remember is that no matter what, friendships are stronger than defining yourself by your one thing.
