"“Spending a lifetime of hunting monsters takes it toll. There comes the time when you gotta let it out that pain inside you. If you don’t, it’ll eat you alive.” -Dean Winchester"

In The Winchesters season 1 episode 5, John and Mary’s feelings for each continue to grow when a new danger reveals itself. Is it Djinn, Akrida, or something else entirely?

The Winchesters Season 1 Episode 5 recap – John and Mary

At the start of the episode, the romantic tension between John and Mary begins. Any fool can see John is head over heels for her.

Mary is the one who seems reluctant to let herself go there. They work on a bike together that was left by his father.

John cutely tries to teach her some things about it, but little does he know, she’s well versed in mechanics. Mary mentions she might not stick around town after her hunting days are over.

It’s a lot of old memories that would be hard for her to suppress. John’s immediate reaction was needing to step away for a moment.

His emotions betray him too quickly. It’s evident to see the last hunt took a lot out of him.

So, the bike is his project to clear his mind and have something good to focus on. His mother can see he has feelings for Mary, as she compares her to Betty.

He tries to tell her it’s not like that, but a blind man could see. John has no idea how Mary feels about him though.

She has a habit of being hot and cold and unclear with her feelings.

The Winchesters Season 1 Episode 5 recap – Djinn or Akrida?

Mary then finds the next case about a councilman Gordon Baxter who died from unknown causes. He had an unknown head trauma where his brain had been smashed apart.

Carlos thinks finding the Akrida is a higher priority than one dead councilman. But Mary thinks going after the councilman’s death could be a lead in finding the Akrida.

This could also be a direct tie in to finding her father. Baxter had a major personality shift of nightmares, mood swings.

Mary and Carlos believe it’s a djinn. They attack a person in their subconscious and feed off their mental energy.

They usually send that person into a coma and then death. Ada meanwhile carries a big secret the group doesn’t know about.

She sees her son in the warehouse as they are keeping watch while the others are searching for the djinn. He gets away.

It’s revealed that Ada is human, and her son Tony is half djinn. She thought that Ali, the man she fell in love with, could use his power for good and heal them.

But his power for feed took over and hunters took him down. Now she has that same fear for her own son.

After hearing Ada’s love story, it’s clear that it made Mary think. Just when you think she might reveal something to John she quickly changes the subject.

We see more flirtation from John and Mary in the car yet again, just say you like each other already. When Ada runs into her son in her dream state back at the warehouse, he tells her he entered peoples dreams to help them face their fears.

But he did feed in the process. But he tells her it’s only enough to get by.

Tony began hearing a sound but the dream he went into held another monster. Something else was controlling them.

He tells them to go find Derek Fisher. Admitting he’s the monster’s next victim, which is the Akrida.

Lata confirms Ada’s dream about her son. He didn’t hurt anyone.

It doesn’t keep her from beating herself up about failing as a mother. Mary dives deeper and asks Ada if she had to do it all over again would she have made the same choices while John listens.

She explains it’s never wrong to follow love. Mary admits to being scared about it in a round about way.

They go to Derek Fisher who hasn’t been overtaken by the monster yet and run into the Akrida. Mary ends up stung by it in the back of her neck.

Tony is the only one that can help if his estranged mother can convince him.

The Winchesters Season 1 Episode 5 recap – Mary Winchester

Tony was, of course, reluctant to help a group of hunters. Though he is angry with his mother he decides to help.

He’s willing to use his powers for good. The Akrida goes into your deepest darkest fears and that’s where Tony has to go.

He needs John to help him. John has to help her confront her fears in order to get the stingers out of her, so the toxins don’t overrule her body and kill her.

He then enters Mary’s dreamworld and meets her. A door led to a child who was part of a werewolf pack her family was hunting.

He’s shown lying in a pool of blood next to bow and arrows. From there they enter another door to her biggest nightmare.

We see a young Mary holding a knife. It was the night they told her that monsters were real, and it would be her job to find them and kill them.

As a young child that would be very traumatic to learn. She faces her fears and tells her younger self she will find a way to open all the doors for her.

We have seen Mary shelter herself out from so much of life, thinking that a hunter is all she can be. John tells her that there can be more.

You can open doors to your heart and all kinds of things. In the end, Mary thanks John for being there with her, through her dreams and helping her battle her greatest faults.

Even Tony and Ada seem to be on track to mending their fences. John tells Mary he thinks she should leave Lawrence when she’s all done hunting too, for a fresh start.

And once the bike is finished it’s all hers to use and go wherever she wants to in the world. Both of them are still hindering their feelings for each other with neither of them ready to admit it.

In the final moments we find out that Roxanne the DJ is behind everything with the monsters. Which made total sense of why the radio tower was being used to call out signals to monsters.

She was the Akrida that had been searching for all along. Don’t miss an all-new episode of The Winchesters on The CW Tuesday November 22 at 8 PM ET.
