It’s been a big year of television premieres, but we’ve still got one month to go before closing the book on television in 2022. From Amazon Prime to Paramount+, here are the five biggest new shows that will be premiering before the end of the year.

Three Pines – Amazon Prime (December 2nd)

Based on the Canadian mystery series, Still Life by Louise Penny, this series brings to life her famous detective character Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. This looks to be a possible big hit for mystery fans as the character is being brought to life by Alfred Molina.

These adaptations of long running book series have proven successful for Amazon’s formula in the past, with series like Reacher, Bosch and Jack Ryan. This one isn’t named after the main character, but Amazon is clearly hoping for another success like it’s seen from the others.

National Treasure: Edge of History – Disney+ (December 14th)

The National Treasure franchise has a surprisingly devoted fanbase. Despite the series consisting of only two movies that came out almost two decades ago at this point, there have been constant clamoring for a third movie to follow Benjamin Franklin Gates through the secret history of America on a cross between Indiana Jones and a US History class.

The first two movies were both successful enough to merit another installment with several different attempts having been made throughout the years to get a new National Treasure story off the ground. But for whatever reason, it’s never come together.

But now fans of the franchise can rejoice, because we finally have an official continuation to the series in the new show National Treasure: Edge of History. The new series will focus on a younger cast of actors, but still aim for the treasure hunting feel of the movies.

While we don’t know yet if Nicholas Cage himself will be making an appearance in the show, Justin Bartha and Harvey Keitel will both be reprising their characters from the movies. It’s clear that Disney is viewing the series as the true third chapter in the National Treasure series.

Of course, for those diehard fans out there still wishing for a third movie with Cage returning, don’t think that this TV series means that a National Treasure movie is out of the question. As recently as August this year, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has stated that the script for the third movie has been completed and has been sent to Nicholas Cage for approval.

1923 – Paramount+ (December 18th)

Surprisingly one of the biggest juggernauts on television right now is the series Yellowstone starring Kevin Costner. The western drama has grown its audience with every season to the point that it’s boasting some of the biggest numbers on cable television right now.

The series has been popular enough for a prequel spinoff on the Paramount+ streaming service titled 1883, taking place in the title year. It has been plenty successful in its own right.

Paramount is hoping that they can get the same level of success again with a prequel series named after the year it takes place, this time putting the action in the year 1923. Interestingly the series stars Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, scoring major points for the series.

We’ll see if the franchise continues to find success in expansion as at least two more spinoffs are in the works after this one.

The Witcher: Blood Origin – Netflix (December 25th)

The Witcher is one of the biggest franchises that Netflix has right now, so it’s no surprise that they’re looking to expand the world with plenty of spinoffs. This show comes at the perfect time as Witcher fans have recently learned that the third season will be the last one with Henry Cavill in the title role.

This limited series will hopefully ease fans into the idea of watching a Witcher series without Cavill’s face featured in every episode. The series serves as a prequel to the Witcher series and is set 1200 years before the events of the main series and appears to be telling the origin story of the first Witcher ever.

Treason – Netflix (December 26th)

Netflix is finishing off the holiday season with a limited series spy thriller. Treason stars Charlie Cox, best known for his portrayal as Marvel’s Daredevil. In this series he plays an MI6 agent who seems to be the ideal agent.

But it’s slowly revealed that the secrets of his past are catching up to him when a mysterious Russian spy reenters his life and begins to complicate matters. The series is taking inspiration from British spy novels such as Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy, with author John le Carre being cited as an influence on the series.

The show’s creator has experience in the genre as well, having written the Bridge of Spies screenplay for Steven Spielberg, so there’s a good chance he’ll have something interesting to add to the genre.
