This week’s episode of Yellowstone starts off with a flashback of John Dutton and his Cowboys about to herd the cattle down to the river. Beth has another perfect chance to make young Rip jealous but this time she is warmer to him.

She tells him to be careful and that she’ll see him when he returns. However, the life of a cowboy can never be a cautious one. Back in present time, Beth asks Rip if he ever thinks about them when they were kids?

He just thinks about the now and doesn’t give much thought to yesterday. But yesterday is what eats Beth alive.

He knows if he thought about it, it would kill him quicker than any danger in nature. It’s apparent the mistakes of the past are still weighing on Beth.

A forest fire is breaking out in the mountains, but their priority right now is branding their cattle. John is going to invite the whole country to watch, news crews, the works.

It will give a great insight to the people of showing them what ranchers do, especially for those environmental groups that see people like John and his cowboys as the enemies, and real animals they think they are. Beth questions John about Summer.

John explains that he needs her. He needs to understand the way she thinks and learn more about her way of thinking and way of life.

Summer needs to do the same for him. She has 6 months of house arrest to finish out her sentence left, and Beth will just have to deal with what comes next.

Summer and Carter have a very good scene together. She questions him about why nobody is helping put out the fire more.

Carter explains people try to put it out but it’s really up to God to put it out. He stands strong when Summer continues with her know-it-all attitude and tells him only nature can do that.

It’s the same thing according to him. They get ready to have a spike camp for two nights.

Lloyd seems super excited to get to do some real cowboy stuff again.

Kayce is still going through strong emotions of losing his son. He’s still worried about what’s next. Monica doesn’t want him to quit his job.

Kayce doesn’t want the job to come between them. Nothing can come between us, she assured them.

Though Monica likes to keep a distance between them and the family, she thinks they should accept John’s offer to go for the branding gathering. On a side note, though I don’t always love the relationship between Kayce and Monica, I think they are each other’s soulmates and best friends.

The moment Monica says I love you and I know I don’t tell you that enough, he never doubts it. This is definitely a growing season for Monica, and she’s actually been tolerable.

Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: Are you gonna ask me or not?

Beth knows Rip will be going off and she wants to go with him this time, a far cry from the flashback years ago. She asks to be outfitted too.

But it’s two days on horseback and he doesn’t think she’d like it. Beth cutely takes offense to it and says she’ll fly to Vegas and have her own fun.

Rip says if he she wants to go just say you want to go. After some laughs, he tells her to dial back the crazy, a statement only he can get away with saying.

But she finds it pretty insulting that Rip finds it inconceivable that she would go. Though this is Beth we are talking about, you can’t blame him.

Rip finally asks her to which she then acts reluctant. He clears his throat and formally asks her.

"“Beth love of my life, I don’t think I can survive two days alone, and God knows that you hate horses and cattle and being dirty and cold. And especially being told what to do. All of which is gonna happen tomorrow, but would you consider coming and sparing me the misery of being without you.”"

Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: The Assistant is in the Vegan is out

John offers Summer to come along for the ride. She’s still fighting basically everything they do.

That is something she’s going to have to let go. Not everyone has the mind of an environmentalist.

There are ways of life that she has to understand and stop disrespecting theirs. Clara, John’s assistant ends up agreeing to come along for the ride.

You can tell she’s got a lot of secrets up her sleeve. She is not only a fabulous assistant but apparently a good rider too.

As much as John drives her crazy, she finds ways to keep him happy and the party happy. Most assistants probably would have been gone with the wind by now.

Clara sees Kayce for the first time once they are at the ranch and asks John if that’s his youngest son. He tells her that is his only son.

It’s a good awareness on exactly how he feels about Jamie. Speaking of Jamie, he gets another visit from Sarah Atwood who wastes no time stripping off her clothes in his office.

Both are walking a fine line, but it is interesting to see how badly this will end for them.

Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: Dutton Dinner: The Free Spirit vs. The Hippie

They have a big supper before heading off on horseback to the gathering. And does any meal gathering at the Dutton ranch go on without a hitch?

Absolutely not. John comes in to summon Beth, Rip and Carter to the main table.

He wants peace and niceness from everyone for one evening. Well it’s a nice dream to have.

The drinks start pouring from Beth which means this never ends up well with an enemy.

"“One big happy family, and an assistant, and a hooker.”-Beth to everyone at the table."

John huffs and tries to let it go. Just as he does, Summer questions Gator about what he’s cooked.

Venison, duck, and dove. She grills the poor man about the history of it all.

Monica is so uncomfortable that she starts cracking up and can’t stop. After all she’s been through the comedy of it gets to her.

To be honest we all needed the comedy relief. Beth tells Summer to take a walk with her and doesn’t give her an option.

John knows it’s a terrible idea and Rip is severely worried. As he should be.

The two walk outside and Beth immediately punches her and knocks her on the ground. There is never any lack of fight in this girl.

They share blow after blow each of them putting up a pretty good fight, at first. As they are going full Rambo on each other, Rip comes out.

He tells them how ridiculous they both look. They do but I think everyone knows they need to get this over with so they can move on.

"”Do you think that you’re gonna beat the other one into respecting your opinion?”-Rip to Beth and Summer."

He tells Beth is this the kind of manners that you want to teach that boy, referencing to Carter. I don’t think any words spoken or by anyone else could have spoken to Beth in that moment, but this one did.

She may not have a biological child but being a mother/mother figure has changed her. Rip then turns to Summer next telling her that you are never going to convince someone to think the way that you think by insulting them in their own home.

Thank you Rip! It’s what we have all been saying since we met Summer.

The cherry on the top is when Rip told Summer to shut up and say thank you. We’ve all been thinking it from day one.

You can respect another person’s way of life even when you disagree and still be civil with them. Still, they had not had enough.

So, he tells them to trade punches until one of them has had enough. Before long it is Summer who threw in the towel.

She ends up crying on the ground. Beth reaches out her hand and helps her to her feet uttering the next words she finally understood.

"“This is my fucking house, you will show me and everyone in it respect. Do you understand?”"

She asks what respect do I get if I give it? Beth replies you get exactly what you give.

Respect is earned and disrespect will only make them keep going in this same bull-headed circle that we are all sick of. Beth hilariously gets one last insult in but they’ve seemed to squashed things and agreed to give each other more respect.

As they return, they share a civil debate at the dinner table. John is not thrilled with the battered and bruised faces of two women he cares a lot for.

But hopefully this is the end of it, and they don’t keep recycling that storyline. John doesn’t quite know how Rip can handle Beth’s wild nature.

He even envies the ability to be that free. It’s rare to see John admit so much to Rip or anyone.

Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: Time to Cowboy Up

The time has come to cowboy up. Everyone shares breakfast beforehand, shockingly for once, it’s a quiet and non-violent meeting.

They all mount their horses. Carter couldn’t be prouder to get to go.

Rip takes in the sight of his wife mounting her horse. I can’t wait to see what comes for their little family on this adventure.

John gives Clara a smirk and says, “I guess you’ve done this before.” She smiles admitting she is from Miles City.

She definitely knows what she’s doing. I hope we get more in depth with this character, I like her more and more each episode.

Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: “Like I got hit by a truck. Like I got his by a Prius.”

Checking in on the girls fight. Here is the major difference between the characters of Beth and Summer.

Nobody is really ever a match for Beth. Though for a woman of small stature, Summer did better than I thought she would.

Beth’s Prius line was perfection when asked how she feels by the Vegan Princess. Summer isn’t sure what to do with herself now.

Beth tells her to walk around and take things in while they are gone.

"“You’ll understand us better, tell me if there is a forest in America in better shape or more loved. Then tell me we’re the enemy.”"

Monica sends off both her guys and tells Kayce to take care of their boy. He’s the only one they’ve got.

Kayce responds by saying he’s gonna fix that. So it does look like Monica and Kayce will try for another baby again and maybe help fill that hole of heartache they both have one day.

Performer of the week: Once again Kelly Reilly. She just gives so much drama and comedy along with fantastic lines.

The writing for Reilly is just too impeccable and her performance is too grand to give the accolades to another this week. I imagine this will continue for the foreseeable future.

She better receive all the awards this year. A nod also goes to Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler), who also got to share some great lines like Reilly.

He was tough when it was called for and soft when it was needed. The strength and chemistry between Beth and Rip is what is making them one of televisions best power couples.

The two of them are really setting the bar for the season. The episode ends with a parallel from the way the episode began, John leading his men in the early hours of the morning.

It shows how far he has come through the years and how much has changed, but yet how much things have remained the same. Catch an all new episode of Yellowstone next Sunday, “Cigarettes, Whiskey, a Meadow and Fog”, Dec. 11 on Paramount Networks.
