Episode 303 of the Netflix series Lost in Space picks up with Don West annoying the alien robot known as “Scarecrow,” while we get into the immediate aftermath of Judy Robinson (Taylor Russell) and her biological father, Grant Kelly. Grant gets to meet everyone else, and the situation is awkward, but what situation isn’t awkward when you’re…Lost in Space!

Meanwhile, we still get a sense that “Dr. Zoe Smith” is still trying to fit in, despite her sociopathic nature being well-established. Will Robinson is busy documenting a cave system, where he finds skeletal remains that look like the robots we know so well.

Then, Will fires his flare gun, revealing a bunch of additional robot skeletons. Then, being his usual savvy self, he activates some nearby controls with a severed alien robot arm (don’t leave home without it!).

As Will is out playing with robot corpses in a cave, Dr. Smith asks Vijay (Ajay Friese) about the health risks associated with being in suspended animation, immediately suggesting she’s planning something, and/or grappling with other people’s plans.

Lost in Space and Dr. Smith up to her old tricks…almost?!

Separately, John Robinson convinces Maureen to carry an anti-robot gun for protection from the Scarecrow during their own part of the mission. Meanwhile, Grant Kelly generates controversy by disabling autopilot on the Jupiter craft, knowing in his heart of hearts that his judgment would be better for their safety in dodging asteroid strikes.

Mr. Kelly is proven correct, but only because he is such a seasoned pro and a legend. Then, off on their own, we almost completely lose faith in Dr. Smith again.

In addition to not wanting to get into the cryotube, she is about to knock Judy out, or maybe even kill her in the cave! However, as Will nearly gets stuck in a room as the doors close, Smith jams the door with the metal object she would have hit Judy with.

In a bit of unknowing, unintentionally awkward humor, Will says it’s a good thing she had the object with her! Then Smith makes a deal with Will.

If he promises to free her from the cryotube, she will distract his parents as he goes on a secret mission. It’s a bit of deceitful teamwork, but teamwork, nonetheless.

SAR attack

By this point in the series, Lost in Space is largely about alien robot engines in season 3, and Maureen and John are out risking their tail feathers for it here. Maureen was even ready to give the Scarecrow robot her gun to show her trust, but it was missing!

Then, as they are surrounded by other robotic forms, they devise a plan to distract the robots by sending out their space cruiser. However, the robots are too smart for that, as they set up a trap and appear to permanently disassemble Scarecrow.

Sure, Scarecrow isn’t quite as lovable as Will Robinson’s robot, but it seemed to be coming around…well, until it is torn apart. Also, Dr. Smith seems shifty as ever, but we at least better understand her sociopathic reasoning, and she almost prefers to hold back at this point.

(Well, kind of.)
