Why we need this specific His Dark Materials spinoff

If there is one consistent thing about HBO’s His Dark Materials, it is the inconsistency of the relationship between Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter. In a rather thrilling plot twist seasons ago, it turned out the two are actually Lyra’s parents.

While some might feel quite emotional upon this revelation, Lyra was quite enraged. She knew Lord Asriel as her uncle since childhood and hates him for killing her friend Roger in order to prove his theory about dust.

Mrs. Coulter is a rather violent, unstable woman, who as much as she loves Lyra, makes questionable decisions and works very closely with The Magisterium. Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter’s current relationship remains complicated, as the two are not together romantically but seem to shift between still loving while hating each other.

It is this tumultuous relationship that is screaming for a spinoff all to its own. For those familiar with the books the series is based upon, their relationship is more thoroughly explained.

What happened between Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter before the events of His Dark Materials season 1?

It turns out the two conducted an affair while Marisa, Mrs. Coulter was married to Edward Coulter. Their love created Lyra, who remained hidden in Lord Asriel’s estate with Mrs. Coulter claiming the baby died.

To prevent Edward Coulter from finding baby Lyra, Lord Asriel challenged him to a duel and won, resulting in Edwad’s death. This fallout essentially destroys both Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter’s lives and resulting in Lyra being raised at Jordan College.

This fallout may also be the cause for both of their actions towards Lyra. Lord Asriel seems to view Lyra as a nuisance rather than his own daughter.

Mrs. Coulter on the other hand loves Lyra to the point of making questionable decisions regarding her safety. As the third and final season draws to a close, we hope to see a more thorough take of the tragic relationship.

Perhaps we could see what kinds of people Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter were like before the events of His Dark Materials season 1.
