His Dark Materials: What is daemon Pan’s final form?
One of the most interesting things about HBO’s His Dark Materials is the fact that everyone in Lyra’s world has a daemon. Daemons are essentially a person’s soul, which takes the form of an animal or insect.
These daemons are bonded to their human and change form until their human has reached puberty. In the case of Lyra Belacqua, our main character, her daemon Pan, short for Pantalaimon, does not “settle” but continually changes forms throughout the series.
In fact, it seems as though Pan’s final form isn’t truly revealed until the series finale. Pan often took the form of smaller animals such as a red panda or ferret.
He never took large and abrasive forms like Lord Asriel’s snow leopard Stelmaria. Pan’s relationship with Lyra was extremely close, which is why her decision to go to the Land of the Dead to save Roger and leaving Pan behind, broke his heart.
What final form did Pan choose in His Dark Materials?
In fact, it seemed as though their relationship was beyond repair. But as we drew closer to the series finale, Pan and Lyra were able to reunite and all was forgiven.
The series finale, as spectacular and emotional as it was, may have revealed Pan’s final form. In the final episodes it seemed as though Pan was sticking to one animal form in particular: a European pine marten.
As the name suggests, these omnivores live mostly in Europe and with a 10–17-year lifespan. Furry and sleek, they love to climb and can birth up to five babies or kits.
Honestly would we expect anything less from Pan? In the final moments of the series finale, as Lyra and Will meet at the same bench in the botanical garden every year, we see that Pan retains the European pine marten form.
Kirjava, Will’s daemon, seems to retain a cat form. Does this mean that Pan has “settled” as a European pine marten?
