Po and Wandering Blade are back, and their journey is taking them to India! In Netflix and DreamWorks Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight season 2 episode 1 “The Liar and The Thief”, they, along with Po’s father and the monkey thief, seek the carrier of a pendant while Klaus and Veruca get closer to finding the next Tianshang weapon.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 2 Episode 1 recap – Wandering Blade’s Guilt

As our four heroes make their way to India, with Po missing China dearly, Wandering Blade seems to be preoccupied with thoughts about what recently occurred. She had lied about her status as a knight, and wonders about what to do while carrying her knight’s code book.

However, upon reaching a city in India, she begins to let go and enjoy the scenery. She’s admiring the brightly colored fabrics, enjoying the food and having fun.

This of course is alarming to Po, but she won’t confide in him. As a last resort, Po asks his father to speak with her.

While Po’s father makes Wandering Blade some soup, he tells her about how he always dreamed of exploring but it never happened simply because life had other plans for him. Wandering Blade accepts the soup, which isn’t noodles as he promised.

He simply shrugs and tells her that sometimes you have to make your own rules.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 2 Episode 1 recap – Thea

The group follows the monkey thief as she had claimed to know where the next Tianshang weapon is located. But first they need to stop and see one of her frenemies, Thea, who carries a magical pendant.

The city that was once a paradise for thieves and other bad folks, has become wholesome and good. This angers the monkey thief who decides to steal anyway, while the other three enjoy the city.

It’s not long before she is caught by an elephant who takes great interest in her staff. After offering a large sum of money for it, she agrees to sell it.

Po stops her, confused as to why she would sell it. She simply claims she’d con him.

Upon reaching her secret hideout, she finds it overrun by children. With guests running amok in the restaurant/indoor playground, the monkey thief tries to find her secret stash of items, but they are gone.

She finally finds Thea, a flying squirrel taking orders as a waitress. After Thea claims to not know who the monkey thief is, the two fight.

They stop when Thea’s family arrive. Speaking in private, Thea reveals that her family does not know about her past.

When the monkey thief never returned, due to her being trapped in the cave, the city changed. Thieves either went to jail or worked.

When asked about the pendant, Thea initially lies, saying she couldn’t figure out how to use it and sold it. What she didn’t expect was Wandering Blade to search for the pendant herself after her heart to heart with Po’s father.

She finds a pendant and flees. When she is cornered by Thea, the flying squirrel confesses that the real pendant was given to the elephant who changed the city.

Wandering Blade gives the pendant back, which was meant to be a gift for the monkey thief. After that situation comes to a close, Wandering Blade decides to toss the knight’s code book into the river.

Po’s words of encouragement do nothing for her as she knows that no matter what, she won’t be seen as a knight back home. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t one.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 2 Episode 1 recap – The next Tianshang weapon

Klaus and Veruca continue their journey by boat to find the next Tianshang weapon, a helmet. As Veruca tries to understand the instructions to find it, Klaus realizes the whip is fake.

Suddenly the wind picks up and the boat moves on its own. As it’s lifted from the water, Klaus and Veruca realize they are being pulled towards an island by possibly the helmet.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 2 Episode 1 review

The first episode of season 2 starts off with a side quest, which might not please some viewers. However, the side quest was the perfect time to also delve into how Wandering Blade has been feeling since she was revealed to be a liar.

Even though she knew she was lying from the beginning she was almost as shocked as everyone else when it was said aloud. Wandering Blade had been so fixated on avenging her brother that she began to believe the lie.

However, her coming to terms that no matter what she does won’t change the minds of those back home, was a huge moment for her character. She had trained, studied, and did everything by the book, literally.

She is a knight, even if others do not agree. This episode also gives us the opportunity to learn more about the monkey thief, who, truth be told, really shined in this episode.

Previously, the monkey thief was my least favorite character, but that might not be the case anymore. However, the fact that Klaus and Veruca will probably obtain another Tianshang weapon isn’t a good sign.
