As Po and his friends follow Master Mastodon, who is still possessing Po’s father, two other characters aren’t far behind. In Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight season 2 episode 5 “Mister Mastodon”, the group winds up aiding a village of frogs in a fight against a monster when the next Tianshang weapon makes itself known!

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 2 Episode 5 recap – A New Team

Guess who’s back? Colin!

One of my favorite characters returns, still seeking to capture Wandering Blade and bringing her back to England. But he’s not alone.

Behold the kimono dragon character we’ve seen on and off from season 1, who I honestly cannot remember his name, has been following him. He wants to team up with Colin, but Colin is less than thrilled to have a partner.

Unfortunately for him, the kimono dragon knows where they can start their search for clues as to where Po and Wandering Blade went. The kimono dragon leads them to Po’s home.

The two search the place, where they find a scroll. Upon opening it, the kimono dragon immediately wants out of the mission.

Angered, Colin demands to know why. Turns out the scroll is an image of Po’s father and the pirate queen who is supposedly so dangerous, the kimono dragon does not want to get involved.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 2 Episode 5 recap – The Chocolate Farm

As the group leaves India and travels by boat, Po cannot get enough of Master Mastodon’s tales of epicness. Even though Wandering Blade doesn’t seem as quick to believe them.

As they reach land, they continue to travel without rest. Unfortunately for them, Master Mastodon doesn’t believe in resting and wants to lead the group how he sees fit.

Thankfully the group comes across a chocolate farm and begin feasting. It isn’t long before they encounter frogs prepared to fight and protect their farm.

The fighting goes on until Master Mastodon calls for it to stop. The frogs take the group in and explain, via mathematics and intellect, that they believe the monster who has been stealing their chocolate will be returning that evening.

The group wants to help but they are tasked with guarding the farm. The monster arrives, in the form of a giant, metal or stone scorpion machine.

Believing the frogs cannot handle the monster, the group interferes but not even the whip can break through. What’s worse is that when Master Mastodon notices that the group cannot defeat the monster, he bails and allows Po’s father to regain control of his body.

This upsets Po greatly, causing Master Mastodon to reveal that he is not the great and powerful warrior the books made him out to be. In short, don’t meet your heroes kids.

The group decides to follow the frog’s plan, which is to lead the monster into a trap. The monster indeed falls through the large ditch, disabling it.

However, whoever was controlling the monster from the inside fled, leaving behind a trail of chicken-like feet. But the danger is far from over when more monsters arrive.

Suddenly a flash and bolt of lightning comes out of nowhere. A mysterious warrior wielding the next Tianshang weapon appears and fends off the monsters before disappearing…

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 2 Episode 5 recap – The Pirate Queen

When the kimono dragon and Colin find the scroll revealing Po’s father with the pirate queen, the show immediately cuts to a scene with her on her boat. A member of her crew arrives in a hurry to tell her that Po’s father has been found.

It seems she’s been searching for him for some time. She’s thrilled and seemingly ready to seek revenge.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 2 Episode 5 review

While I am thrilled to see Colin return and express his frustrations with his mission, I’m not as thrilled about another side plot coming into the mix. I had my concerns when season 1 concluded, as we didn’t know if a second season was even going to happen, especially after the cliffhanger ending.

While I’m glad the story can continue, I’m worried it will be stretched to the point where if this season finale is also a cliffhanger, it may not warrant a third season. Then we’d be left with an incomplete story.

Introducing new characters is fun and all, but after a while it’d be nice if the plot could stay on target, which is the Tianshang weapons. We literally spent two to three episodes about a pendant, just to get our characters on track to finding more Tianshang weapons.

Now we have to worry about a pirate queen who is after Po’s father, conveniently now, after all these years… I know it was joked around that Po’s dad had a wild past, and now we’re probably getting more insight into it.

But at the same time, I preferred Po’s dad as his loving, sometimes honest to a fault, dad. I don’t need some wild backstory before he came to own the noodle shop.

I’m hoping this detour won’t take too long, but who knows. It may be really cool and it might not be.

As much as I enjoy watching Klaus and Veruca, it was nice to get a break from them a little bit. I’m sure we’ll be seeing them both very soon.

I am most curious about who is controlling the monsters and who is carrying the next Tianshang weapon.
