In Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight season 2 episode 8, “An Uphill Battle”, Po and his friends find themselves in a battle they cannot win and learn who wields the storm wheels. Season 2 is drawing to a close and it looks like things are finally heating up!

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 2 Episode 8 recap – Queen Zuma

The episode opens with Po waking up, surrounded by smoke and ash, trying to find his friends. Rukmini is unconscious, his father is tied to a tree, and Wandering Blade seems to be falling unconscious herself.

The episode then jumps back to where we left off with Po and his friends meeting Queen Zuma. To they’re surprise, Queen Zuma is very casual, young, and seemingly innocent.

Instead of listening to what Wandering Blade is trying to say about the storm wheels, Queen Zuma decides to sing and dance. Frustrated Wandering Blade sings too, by simply stating that they know who she is.

In a twist I really didn’t think would happen, Queen Zuma is The Protector, however she only has one of the two storm wheels. She found them buried, until a mad scientist came and stole one of them, that they are using to create their scorpion monsters.

Queen Zuma will give them her storm wheel if they handle the situation with the mad scientist.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 2 Episode 8 recap – The Battle at the volcano

It doesn’t take long for the group to find a volcano, believing this to be where the mad scientist and the scorpion monsters are residing. On the way, Po begins questioning what they should do with the Tianshang weapons once everything is over.

He wants them to wield them, so that they can use them for good, as hiding them only means bad folks can still find them. Master Mastodon becomes enraged at the idea and so they tie him to a tree.

The group tries to enter the volcano when Klaus and Veruca arrive. A battle ensues between them, and we see firsthand how using the Tianshang weapons against each other causes more damage than good.

Even though they put up a great fight, including Rukmini, it is not enough. Mr. Ping sees that his son is in danger and orders Master Mastodon to help.

He breaks free from the tree and manages to use the fire whip better than Rukmini ever did.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 2 Episode 8 recap – New Allies

Just when the battle reaches its peak, one of the scorpion monsters arrives to fend off Klaus and Veruca. Unfortunately, the weasel siblings manage to escape with their weapons.

From inside the scorpion monster, a tiny and adorable bird greets the group and offers them safety inside. The group enters the volcano as the episode comes to a close.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight Season 2 Episode 8 review

Now this is what I was hoping season 2 would be delivering. We don’t need crazy battles every episode but there should have been more action as a whole.

I loved the confusing intro that makes you wonder if it’s a dream or events yet to come. I liked the spontaneity of Queen Zuma’s dance party (and I am usually the one who dislikes musical episodes in television shows).

I liked how serious everything became when the battle at the volcano commences. The plot twists helped too.

Hopefully the rest of the season will follow this formula and not come to a grinding halt before the season finale.
