The Blade Runner franchise is getting bigger. In February of 2022, it was announced that Amazon would be creating a new television show set in the Blade Runner Universe, with the show getting the official green light in September. Now, it looks like the project is moving forward, as a director has been hired for the series pilot. Jeremy Podeswa will be directing the pilot for the new Blade Runner television series, titled Blade Runner 2099.

Podeswa has been directing for television for over twenty years, though he is best known for his work on Game of Thrones where he directed six different episodes from seasons five, six, and seven. His work on Game of Thrones has earned him nominations for an Emmy and a Director’s Guild Award for Outstanding Directing.

In addition to Game of Thrones, Podeswa has directed for other high-profile shows such as, among other titles, Dexter, The Tudors, The Walking Dead, True Detective, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Boardwalk Empire, for which he was nominated for another Emmy.

More Blade Runner to catch up on

Blade Runner 2099, is actually the second television series that is set in this universe. In 2021, Blade Runner: Black Lotus was an anime that was set in the Blade Runner universe set thirteen years after the events of the original movie. The anime was produced for Adult Swim and Crunchyroll, with Adult Swim airing an English dub of the series, and Crunchyroll airing the series in Japanese with English subtitles.

While it’s not been confirmed, it seems safe to assume that Blade Runner 2099 will take place in the year 2099. After all, the movie sequel Blade Runner 2049, took place in that year, and all three short films that were produced to expand the franchise’s lore, have the year that they take place in the title of the film. This will make Blade Runner 2099 the most distant future that the franchise has yet to explore, taking place nearly a century after the events of the original movie.

Blade Runner 2099 cast updates

While it’s unknown who will be in the show’s cast yet, some of the behind-the-scenes talent has been confirmed. Ridley Scott, the director of the original movie, will be getting an Executive Producer credit on the project as will Michael Green who wrote the screenplay for the second movie. Silka Luisa, who is best known for Shining Girls, will be the series showrunner.
