The fourth season of Netflix’s You left quite a mark. By the time it was done, fans were happy with a much better showing than the past two seasons, along with the fact that there were quite a few shocking moments that had us gasping.

The following will contain spoilers from You

The season saw Joe Goldberg, with a changed identity, in London as a professor after the apparent murder-suicide from last season severed his connection with Love. Naturally, he found himself in the company of an intriguing lady once more.

And once more, murder and mayhem followed him. Let’s take a look at some of the most shocking moments from You season 4.

You Season 4 Moment: Roald tries to kill Joe

Joe has a habit of meeting intriguing women, but he also has a habit of making enemies of others who are fascinated by them. This time, he tripped into a wild group of elite-rich friends who seemingly welcomed him in, despite him not “coming from money”.

As they seemingly start getting murdered one by one, the group of friends decided to take a holiday in the Hampsie house. This takes a dark turn when Joe gets into a confrontation with Roald, who suspects him of being the murderer.

Things take a wilder turn! Viewers are left sitting on the edge of their seats, when Roald pushes Joe out of a window.

Thankfully, he falls in a hedge. But things continue to get worse for him, as he is then chased through the woods by a gun-wielding Roald.

Eventually, Joe was able to escape him, and even refused to pin the murders on him as instructed by Rhys. Talk about quite the forgiving nature.

You Season 4 Moment: Joe jumps off a bridge to kill himself

Joe Goldberg is many things, but at heart he is a narcissist. While still coming to terms with the many terrible things he had done, it appeared that this side of Joe seemed to vanish at one point in the season.

He was tired and wanted to redeem himself. Seeing that there was no escape, he did the only thing that he could – he tried to kill himself.

The moment that Joe jumps off a bridge, willing to sacrifice his life for his own crimes, catches everyone by surprise. This goes against everything that the man had been in the past, willing to go to any lengths to protect himself.

In the end, he obviously survives and ends up in an even more vicious relationship, this time with a partner who is rich and ready to cover up his crimes.

You Season 4 Moment: Joe having Marienne locked in a cage

By far, one of the most beloved characters from the series was Marienne. She wanted to escape the clutches of Joe and had even fled the country with her daughter to do so.

When Joe caught up to her, everyone feared the worst. Especially when he was also instructed to kill her to protect his new identity.

However, he let her go and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Thus, there was a huge moment of shock when it turned out that Joe had never really let her go.

The audience found out the hard way, as she was seen suddenly inside the very box that had been used by Joe to kill several of his previous victims.

Previous seasons of You, have had a pattern. Joe falls in love and then kills the person he apparently fell in love with.

Fans expected the worst when Marienne was seen in the cage. It was thought that she would surely die.

The scenes with her struggling in the cage, imagining herself telling stories to her daughter back home, were truly heart-rending. However, Joe’s student Nadia, finds Marienne and then together they come up with a plan to fake her death.

Marienne pretends to have an allergic reaction. When Joe comes back, he sees that she’s taken her own life.

This was not surprising given he had effectively had her daughter taken away from her, because he had kept her imprisoned long enough. All of this was a ploy.

The person he messaged to find the daughter was being taken away by none other than Nadia. On top of that, they used drugs to make it seem Marienne had taken her life.

This makes Joe leave her on a park bench so to appear that she had overdosed. Nadia arrives and gives Marienne the restorative, and thus she was able to get away and get back to her daughter.

A rare happy story in You.

You Season 4 Moment: Alter Ego of Joe

The audience has gotten to know Joe pretty well over the last three seasons of You. He has a lot of issues and unresolved trauma from his past.

He has even hallucinated. But no one expected Joe to have an underlying disassociation identity disorder.

He created his own Moriarty, in the alter-ego of Rhys Montrose. It was nothing other than another side of his personality.

And while Joe is scary, Rhys Montrose was truly terrifying. Thus, when it came out that he was not battling Montrose after all, and that it was his own mind that he was battling, it was a shock to everyone.

Especially, since he had just killed the real-life Montrose.
