Amazon’s The Rings of Power faces backlash after horse dies on set

The highly anticipated second season of Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been rocked by tragedy. During rehearsals for a scene, a production horse died of cardiac arrest on March 21.
The incident has sparked an outcry from animal rights activists, who are calling for the show to use CGI animals instead of real ones.

Production Horse Dies on Set
On March 21, a horse employed in the production of The Rings of Power suffered cardiac arrest ahead of rehearsals. A spokesperson for Amazon Studios confirmed the incident and expressed condolences, stating that a veterinarian and a representative of the American Humane Association were present at the time of the incident.
The independent necropsy later confirmed that the horse died of cardiac failure.
Calls to End the Use of Real Horses
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) released a statement condemning the use of real horses in film and television production, urging the entertainment industry to switch to more humane methods such as CGI and mechanical rigs.
“While PETA has argued that horses should not be used in film or television productions at all, it has stated that equine behaviorists should be on set at all times when they are.”
