We got big news for fans of HBO’s The White Lotus! The show’s creator Mike White has been spotted in Southeast Asia.
In an exclusive report, Variety has revealed that the third season of the award-winning HBO series may very likely be set in Thailand.
After two excellent seasons, multiple sources close to the production have confirmed to Variety that they are indeed, scouting locations on properties of the Four Seasons resorts in Thailand. This could be anywhere from Bangkok, Koh Samui, the Golden Triangle, or Chiang Mai.
After previous seasons were set in Hawaii and Italy, the country known as The Land of Smiles offers plenty of black comedy opportunities to play out. I mean, the locals have 13 distinct smiles as a range of non-verbal communication tools.
This includes one known as “Fuen Yim,” or the “I should laugh at the joke even though it’s not funny” smile. We’ll likely see that one deployed a lot in the next season (I hope).
Expectations are high after the series won accolades from multiple esteemed awards bodies including the SAG Awards, the Emmy Awards, the Critics’ Choice, and the Golden Globes. This includes a worthy Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Jennifer Coolidge, who played the aimless and ostentatiously rich, Tanya McQuoid.
Though Tanya met a tragicomic end in the last season, it was truly a memorable character and fans of series have been clamoring to see a similar character, they could root for in the new five-star Thailand setting. Production has yet to start on the third season, yet streaming forums and fan community sites are already hyped for an all-new best-worst vacation.
I mean, I am.
