The newest addition to the Bridgerton TV show universe is nearly here! Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story finally arrives to Netflix on May 4!

The show, which can be considered a Bridgerton prequel, tells the story of how the future Queen Charlotte meets, marries, and reigns alongside her husband, King George. Queen Charlotte is a very prevalent character in Bridgerton, not only due to her royal title, but her power and influence.

It is she who chooses who the Diamond of the First Water will be each season, as young ladies hope to meet their future husbands in the ton. It is she who then allows or disallows couples to marry.

While she, like everyone else in the ton, enjoys the gossip written by the mysterious Lady Whistledown, she also maintains her friendships with Lady Agatha Danbury and Violet Bridgerton. Her often-stoic demeanor camouflages her deep heartbreak over her husband’s condition.

But even we know, there is more to her than what has been shown and now we’ll finally get to know the real Queen Charlotte. But before we do, here are five things you need to know before watching the upcoming show.

1. King George’s Fate

As we mentioned, Queen Charlotte’s husband, King George has a very, nonspecific, unfortunate condition. Could be mania, could be bipolar, or perhaps dementia.

All the same he is rarely seen in Bridgerton, due to his constant unpredictability. One moment he is having a loving moment with his wife and the next he goes into a fit of rage.

One moment he remembers the past and the next forgets what’s even happening in the first place. In a way, Queen Charlotte has lost her husband, a man she still loves deeply.

While King George is young and hopefully has his wits about him in the upcoming show, it won’t change the fact that he will one day meet this sad fate.

2. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story TV Rating

It’s safe to assume from watching both seasons of Bridgerton as well as the Queen Charlotte trailer, that sexual content is inevitable. Although Bridgerton season 2 seemed to have less sexual content than the first season, we don’t think the Queen Charlotte spinoff will be slowing things down.

The obvious passion between the royal couple is steamy, which means the show will not be intended for younger audiences. For context Bridgerton has a TV-MA rating on Netflix.

We highly doubt Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story will be anything less.

3. The women of Bridgerton

As we mentioned, this Queen Charlotte show is essentially a Bridgerton spinoff. Meaning we will be seeing a younger Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton!

If you haven’t seen Bridgerton, you may not understand the true value and worth of the friendship and bond between these women. Each of them are wonderful women in their own way.

Where Violet is ever cautious and often a mediator, Agatha can speak the minds of everyone in the room and not be afraid to. We already established Queen Charlotte often remains elusive in her feeling and thoughts, but now and again she lets her true self shine through.

As much as we look forward to seeing the real Queen Charlotte, we’ll have equal fun getting to know Violet and Agatha as well.

4. Queen Charlotte and King George’s Relationship

The bulk of the Queen Charlotte spinoff will be about her relationship with King George. How did they meet?

Who arranged their marriage and why? How did their relationship begin?

Their relationship, like most, will not be perfect but it will be very different than ones we’ve seen on Bridgerton. By the time of Bridgerton, the ton is full of different races, coexisting without issue.

This probably would not have happened if not for Queen Charlotte and King George’s marriage. Add to it, this will be Bridgerton’s first look into a royal marriage.

Previous marriages were between characters who were rich and prominent in the ton. How will a royal marriage fair in comparison?

5. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story Setting

Bridgerton takes place in the Regency Era, which is relatively from 1795 to 1837. Yes, this is the time period before the Victorian Era.

This means a lot of customs, fashion and events that happen will not be happening, or at least just beginning, during the Queen Charlotte spinoff. However, this should be seen as no surprise as the trailer for the show revealed a lot of differences right out the gate, most noticeably the fashion.

Depending on how old the characters are, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story could be taking place during the Georgian Era, which is from 1714 to 1837. Yes, it does combine with the Regency Era.

Most importantly, the time period will reveal both similarities and differences to the Regency Era. This includes customs, fashion and events.

It will be fun to see a slightly different time period and how that will affect the story of the spinoff. Did customs change for the better during the Regency Era?

We’ll have to wait and see!
