Well, it looks like the Gotham Knights won’t be saving the city of Gotham anymore. It was announced earlier this week that The CW will not be picking up Gotham Knights for a second season.

What happened?

For several weeks now, there have been three different CW shows, with neither a renewal nor a cancelation decision being made. Now all three shows have their answer.

While All American: Homecoming, and Superman & Lois were both renewed, Gotham Knights was the one to be canceled. In some ways, the announcement shouldn’t be that surprising.

Of the three shows in question, Gotham Knights was the one getting the lowest ratings. However, compared to other shows on The CW, the series was pulling in respectable ratings, so what was the reasoning behind the cancellation?

It seems that there are some major changes going on behind the scenes at The CW. This year has been rather brutal if you are a fan of the content the channel is best known for.

In fact, prior to the renewal announcement of All American: Homecoming and Superman & Lois, the channel had only renewed two other shows, All American and Walker. The rest of the channel’s scripted lineup has been canceled including Kung Fu, Walker: Independence, and The Winchesters, the Supernatural spinoff.

With The CW taking the entire channel in a new direction, it seemed like it would ultimately choose only one superhero TV show to save; either Superman & Lois, which was more popular but also more expensive, or Gotham Knights, which had lower ratings, but was comparatively cheaper to produce.

Is there any way Gotham Knights could return?

While there was some very brief discussion of the possibility of the series moving to a different network, or possibly going directly to a streaming service such as MAX, the showrunners were upfront about the chances of a continuation, saying in a statement, “At this point it’s virtually impossible. There’s a million mind-numbing production logistics working against us at this point, and resurrecting the show would be extremely cost prohibitive.” For fans who want to get a final chance to spend some time with the Gotham Knights, the show will close out its 13-episode run later this month with the season (and now series) finale scheduled to air on June 27.
