The Walking Dead: Dead City appears to have two villains Negan and Maggie need to worry about. The Croat (Zeljko Ivanek), essentially the main villain, is responsible for kidnapping Hershel, among others at the Hilltop for collateral.

In order for Maggie to rescue her son from his clutches and the deadly New York City, she’ll need Negan’s help. Why?

It was obvious to Maggie the moment The Croat used the same whistle as Negan. Not surprisingly we learn that Negan and The Croat have history.

But Negan’s worries are just beginning as Perlie (Gaius Charles), a Marshal from New Babylon, isn’t far behind. He’s seeking Negan for the murder of another Marshal and has revealed that he values law and order above all else.

The Walking Dead: Dead City: What is Perlie’s motivation and why?

Even it means sending people to their gruesome deaths. His near obsessive devotion to the law has us wondering if there is more to his character.

In the first episode he had mentioned having a wife and daughters in the hopes he’ll sound relatable enough to coax Maggie, Negan and his captured comrade out of hiding. But even when he and Maggie spar and she admits why she needs Negan alive, he still attempts to kill her.

Kind of odd considering he’s a family man, no? We mentioned it briefly in our recap, that we believe his wife and daughters are dead and thus his mindset on law and order changed dramatically.

Were they captured, murdered, betrayed, eaten by walkers? For a man to become so invested in his role, to the point he hardly flinched when he accidentally shot and killed his comrade, we’re betting something tragic happened to them.

This isn’t anything new in the scheme of things. The Walking Dead villains often have a traumatic moment in their past, if not their entire past, that changes them for the worse.

Remember Terminus? What’s worse for Perlie is that any family he had may be gone, as episode 2 revealed his brother had killed himself in his apartment.

Perlie may be all on his own and the only thing he has left is his job to protect survivors and punish criminals. However, what did all this cost him?

Will his utter devotion to the law play right into The Croat’s hands? The Walking Dead: Dead City season 1 episode 3 airs on Sunday, July 2 on AMC.
