The wait is nearly over for Loki to grace our television screens again in Loki season 2. The Disney Plus Marvel Studios original series places a variant of the god of mischief in trouble with the TVA (Time Variance Authority).

To avoid getting erased from time itself, Loki aids Mobius and other TVA agents in finding a specific Loki variant, who has been causing havoc to the timeline for years. Season 1 ended on a very eye-opening cliffhanger, setting the stage for Marvel’s newest bad guy: Kang the Conqueror.

But as we all come to find out, the story isn’t over yet. In case you have forgotten what happens in season 1 or have yet to watch, here are 5 things you need to know before watching season 2 when it premieres on the streaming platform October 6.

5. Which Loki is Loki?

So, this can’t be the Loki audiences watch die at the hands of Thanos at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War, right? Correct, it’s not.

This Loki is the one who escaped capture in The Avengers via the tesseract, thanks to the Avengers time traveling in Avengers: Endgame. This Loki was not supposed to escape capture as the rest of his life was planned, down to the moment Thanos kills him.

That makes this Loki a variant; a dangerous person, who if unchecked, can disrupt the timeline. This is why he is arrested by the TVA, placed on trial, and nearly faces his demise if it weren’t for Mobius’ interfering, suggesting that he aid the TVA in capturing another Loki variant they have yet to find.

And yes, this does mean that this Loki was not aware of his mother’s death, his constant failures and death until watching his life unfold on screen at the TVA.

4. What is the TVA?

The TVA (Time Variance Authority) are the ones who make sure, under the surveillance of the Time-Keepers, that the flow of time is not disrupted. The entire organization seeks variants and upon their removal from the situation, reset time so that the event never occurred.

Sounds strange but simple enough, right? Trouble is variants do not realize they are variants or that they have done anything wrong to begin with.

The lives of everyone are predetermined by the Time-Keepers, meaning even the smallest of errors, like being late for work, can be seen as dangerous to the timeline. What’s more is in one of the more surprising plot twists of the show thus far, the Time-Keepers were revealed to be nothing more than androids, built by the real man behind it all: He Who Remains.

But the biggest plot twist of the TVA will be discussed later in this article.

3. Season 1 Finale

After Loki and Sylvie learn more about each other, to the point of developing feelings for one other, they come to the agreement that they need to stop the TVA, by stopping the Time-Keepers. But when they discovered them to be mere androids, the truth started to unravel.

The man behind all of this, from the beginning is He Who Remains. He is the one behind keeping time and space intact as a safety measure to prevent utter destruction.

This includes the havoc his variants are capable of. He Who Remains will look familiar to many now as, his variants include Kang the Conqueror and Victor Timely; both of whom audiences have seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

He Who Remains knows everything, except the final moments of Loki and Sylvie’s arrival. Although Loki seeks reason for everything that has occurred, terrified of what will happen if time and space are disrupted, Sylvie cannot.

She had spent her whole life, from a child to now, running from the TVA. She never knew why, as a child no less, she was seen as a threat to the timeline.

Disregarding Loki’s pleas she kills He Who Remains and the result causes everything to change, including the TVA not recognizing Loki the moment he returns.

2. Miss Minutes

Perhaps not surprising, depending who you ask, is the reveal that Miss Minutes wasn’t always as innocent as she seemed. The holographic, sentient clock with a pleasant voice reminiscent of a kind and patient mentor, is meant to be the TVA’s mascot, informing variants of what’s to come when they arrive, as well as aid Ravonna.

But audiences later come to find that the sweet and cheery clock is more nefarious than she let on. In the season 1 finale she greets both Loki and Sylvie when they arrive at the Citadel at the End of Time.

She tries to tempt them to accept a very gracious offer. The two decline which displeases the clock.

Miss Minutes, who appeared to be working directly with Ravonna, truly works for He Who Remains. She was aware of his existence, knew the Time-Keepers story was essentially a lie, and when push comes to shove, she’ll act on He Who Remains best interests.

In short, you can’t, nor should you really trust her. She may become an even bigger threat in season 2.

1. The Plot Twist

Did you predict that everyone at the TVA, including Ravonna, were all variants? Yes, it’s true!

Everyone at the TVA were variants, plucked from their lives and forced to work at the organization. This explains why Mobius wanted a jet ski.

It also explains why no one knows how they got to the TVA or how long they’ve been there. There were subtle hints this was possible when Sylvie used her powers against several TVA agents.

But it was assumed that she created an illusion or false story to get information. Turns out Sylvie can’t just create illusions.

She simply uses the memories of the person she’s controlling to create the scenario. This plot twist changes the game for the TVA, as agents who were devoted to the organization were now ready to aid Loki against it.

Why did the TVA do this? How did they do this?
