The mission to find Laurent may come at a price for Isabelle. In The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 1 episode 4, we learn that Genet, leader of the Power of the Living military group has also taken a special interest in Laurent.

It’s a race against time. Who will find Laurent first?

Let’s find out!

The episode opens with Daryl having a dream that he’s trapped behind a locked gate, about to witness Laurent being eaten alive by walkers. But to his surprise, Laurent remains untouched.

Foreshadowing perhaps? When Daryl does awaken he is in water, about to be attacked by walkers.

After killing both he pulls himself out and remembers falling through the rooftop. After getting himself together he searches for Isabelle, but runs into the man with the homing pigeons.

When a group of Genet’s men try stealing the pigeons, the man pleads for their safe return. He is shot in the process, leaving Daryl to kill the men in retribution.

Before the man dies he requests that the pigeons be freed. Daryl helps release them.

He eventually finds Isabelle at her old apartment where she informs him Laurent is missing. Lucky for her Daryl knows where Laurent probably is.

What’s unlucky is that Genet herself has arrived at Fallou’s home and begins questioning the widow Laurent comforted, about the boy. It becomes apparent very quickly that although Genet does not believe in Laurent’s destiny, she cannot have this kind of weak-minded thinking existing.

Another possible foreshadow?

Isabelle and Daryl successfully arrive to the Eiffel Tower where lo and behold, Laurent is. The child is enamored with the structure but finds himself in danger, once the area that has been blocked off due to walkers, collapses.

Isabelle and Daryl work together to kill the walkers and almost manage to save Laurent when he is captured by strange men. Daryl’s not fast enough and the boy is taken away in an SUV.

One of the men bites the dust, whereas the other can be used for information. What unfolds is, as promised, old school Daryl coming into play when Isabelle is unable to get information.

Daryl tells a made up story about a boy from his childhood and his pig in order to not only make the man suffer, but get the information they need. He does reveal that Quinn took Laurent and he knows a secret way of getting inside the nightclub Demimonde.

Turns out when Quinn had heard of Laurent’s disappearance and how badly Genet wants him, Anna decided to help and tells Quinn where Laurent most likely went. However, her motives for doing so seem to be to obtain Quinn’s approval and perhaps love.

Laurent spends some time with Quinn, figuring out that the man is his father. Their time is cut short when Genet arrives.

Playing his cards right, Quinn offers to help her and Codron find Daryl, while also keeping his eyes open for Laurent. He doesn’t seek money or liquor, only a Monet as Quinn does have an eye and taste for art.

Genet agrees to the deal. Meanwhile, Fallou and members of his group, including Emile, decide to create a distraction for Daryl to enter the nightclub. Before they leave, Sylvie asks Isabelle about her relationship with Daryl, as Sylvie has caught feelings for Emile.

Although Isabelle playfully denies any romantic feelings for Daryl, Sylvie wants to stay in Paris to not only be with Emile but because she believes she can help with Fallou’s group. As Fallou and his small group distract Quinn’s guards at the main entrance of Demimonde, Daryl and the hostage follow the path.

The hostage tries to escape but Daryl is able to catch up. After receiving proper instructions moving forward, Daryl leaves the hostage for dead as he’s eaten by walkers.

Daryl manages to enter the nightclub and finds Laurent in the same room as Anna. Although she holds them both at gunpoint, she eventually allows Laurent to leave unharmed.

Daryl doesn’t get far when Quinn finds him. The two fight above the nightclub with Daryl beating Quinn to a near pulp.

The only reason Daryl refrains from killing the man is because he catches Laurent watching. They flee from the nightclub and reunite with Isabelle, Fallou and his small group outside near the river.

It’s here the group learns that they can’t stay for long because Genet and her group will be ensuring no one leaves Paris. Isabelle takes it upon herself to stay behind.

She’ll go to Quinn as leverage so that Daryl and Laurent can continue onward to the Nest. Although both argue with her, with Daryl looking very conflicted about the situation, the duo leaves safely on the boat.

The episode ends with Isabelle returning to Quinn, much to Anna’s displeasure. Daryl and Laurent look onward to their next destination.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 1, episode 4 review

We are nearing the end of the first season and at this point, there is no telling how the spinoff will wrap up. Will Laurent arrive to the Nest and if so, what or who will be waiting for him.

We already know Codron knows where they are going thanks to the map at the convent. But it doesn’t seem as though Genet is aware of their final destination.

Add to it we still do not know how Carol fits into this story, as she has been confirmed to be appearing in season 2. What I do think did happen is that Genet herself or her group is behind the walker apocalypse.

It’s a stretch but her utter distaste for weak people, even those who cling onto hope, may be enough directive to want to wipe out said weak people from the world. With the weak and hopeful perished, only the strong survive.

We’ll have to see what is revealed before the season concludes. I am disappointed Isabelle will not continuing on Daryl and Laurent’s journey as I’ve become accustomed to her interactions and bond with Daryl.

I had mentioned previously the acting chemistry between Clémence Poésy and Norman Reedus is incredible! We’ll have to see how she returns, if that too will not be until season 2.
