Disney Plus Loki season 2, episode 5 recap “Science/Fiction”
In Loki season 2 episode 5 titled “Science/Fiction”, Loki finds himself time slipping again, only this time he’s traveling to times and places where his friends from the TVA are. Desperate to save the TVA, Loki must figure out a way to stop the destruction of time.
Will he be too late? Let’s find out!
Loki season 2, episode 5 recap – Loki’s time slipping
The episode opens with Loki opening his eyes after the explosion of the Temporal Loom, to find that he’s the only one left in the TVA. After a series of uncontrollable time slips, Loki manages to retrieve a copy of the TVA handbook before the world around him slowly begins to dissolve.
He manages to time slip again, this time to where Casey, whose name is actually Frank, is escaping Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary with two other inmates. Once again Casey does not recognize him and before long Loki disappears.
He manages to find Hunter B-15 working as a pediatrician at a New York hospital, Mobius working as a jet ski salesman and O.B, a struggling self-published science fiction writer. Luckily for Loki his time slipping pauses while trying to explain everything to O.B.
O.B, being a science fiction writer, believes Loki and together they try to solve the problem. O.B’s belief that Loki controlling his time slipping can solve the problem of saving the TVA doesn’t impress the god of mischief.
O.B does have another theory that if Loki can bring his friends from the TVA together, their collective aura can bring them back to the TVA to save it from destruction. Thanks to Loki snatching a copy of the TVA handbook before time slipping, O.B now has a means to begin this difficult task.
It is also important to note that O.B’s office/working area looks practically identical to his office at the TVA.
Loki season 2, episode 5 recap – Bringing everyone together
Loki’s first attempt is to convince Mobius, a single father of two very destructive and out of control boys. Mobius doesn’t believe Loki until O.B arrives, managing to have read the TVA handbook and started creating TemPads.
Hesitant to leave his sons behind, Loki assures Mobius he can always return to them, but his sons won’t exist unless the TVA is saved. From there, Loki and O.B are able to grab Hunter B-15 and Casey, until all that’s left is Sylvie.
Sylvie isn’t surprised to see Loki again as she finishes her shift at the McDonald’s. The two share a drink at a bar, where she believes Loki is being selfish for ripping people from their lives to work at the TVA.
Loki, however, sees it as the world itself cannot exist without the TVA, adding that it is where people enjoyed working. However, this time around it seems Sylvie is the one to speak sense into Loki.
She advises him to write his own story as his friends were able to do. Later that evening, Sylvie visits a local record store and chooses a record to listen to.
Unfortunately, the record store soon begins to fall apart, leaving her only moments to escape thanks to her own TemPad. She is able to find Loki and the rest of the group, just as Loki was essentially telling everyone that the plan is over.
Loki season 2, episode 5 recap – Taking back control
But just as everyone got back together…Casey disintegrates before their eyes. Soon everyone in the room, including Sylvie, vanishes leaving Loki behind.
In that moment he time slips and realizes he can now control it. Loki can now control his own story.
The episode ends with Loki time slipping back to the TVA with O.B, assumably before the Temporal Loom explodes.
Loki season 2, episode 5 review
Let’s be honest here, when Sylvie was asking Loki what he wanted at the bar, she wanted him to say that he wanted her. Truthfully Loki probably does.
But he wants so much more than that. Loki has evolved fantastically well since his humble beginnings in Thor.
We can’t say the same for many Marvel characters. Now that Loki can seemingly control his time slipping, what great changes can, and will he make?
Will he be able to change everything that has ever happened in the MCU? Or is there yet to be another plot twist waiting in the corner to emerge?
With one episode left, who knows how season 2 will conclude! While the explanations of time slipping can be hard to follow at times, it proved to be an excellent addition to Loki’s ongoing story.
Will the season finale leave clues or hints for another season, or will the events transfer to an upcoming Marvel film?
