When the official trailer for Echo was released, we doubt anyone expected that the rating for the upcoming Marvel show would be TV-MA. The Hawkeye spinoff is due to air on the streaming giant Disney Plus on January 10, but viewers will need to set their profile to TV-MA in order to watch.

While this may sound surprising, we expected nothing less from a television show that will feature the return of Marvel villain royalty: Wilson Grant Fisk AKA: Kingpin. From what we can gather in the trailer, we will be seeing Echo’s story through both flashbacks of her childhood and her present battles.

There was never any doubt that her uncle, Kingpin, loved and cared for Echo AKA: Maya Lopez very much. However, his love for her can often present itself in violent ways, as we see him beat an ice cream vendor to near death for taunting little deaf Maya.

Kingpin returns in the Echo official trailer

The trailer reveals a lot of action sequences, focusing perhaps just as much on Echo as Kingpin. It seems as though we will be diving into their relationship and how it drastically changed in Hawkeye.

As we recall, in the show Echo is determined to kill Clint in revenge for her father’s death. However, she learns that Kingpin was the reason her father was murdered in the first place.

At the end of Hawkeye, she seemed to kill Kingpin offscreen, but alas he is alive and missing an eye. Brutal.

Between the beautiful combination of her past and present, which includes a lot of Native American imagery, Echo looks to be promising a more centrally focused tale, that, like Moon Knight, may become a separate story in the grander MCU universe. Consider us intrigued, excited and ready for the new year!
