Netflix's A Different World follows Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), Dwayne & Whitley's daughter, as she begins her freshman year at Hillman College.
The season 1 premiere opens with freshman registration day at Hillman. There, Deborah meets Amir (Jordan Aaron Hall), a fellow freshman who, because of a housing shortage, doesn't have a room. At the same time, Deborah struggles with her new class schedule, handpicked by her Hillman alum parents.
Deborah believes she should be at Tisch, not Hillman, but a mysterious incident changed her plans. As a result, she's been placed on academic probation at Hillman, and her advisor (played by the legendary Debbie Allen) makes it clear that Deborah needs a 3.0 GPA to avoid further disciplinary action.
As Deborah comes to terms with her new normal, Kojo (Chibuikem Uche) promotes his clothing line on social media. He gets distracted by Rashida (Alijah Kai), a scholarship student who seems immune to the UK native's charms. Kojo makes his intentions to pursue Rashida clear, but she isn't feeling it.

Enter five-star, also known as Shaquille Johnson.
Shaquille is Hillman's first five-star football athlete. He arrives on campus in true star fashion, accompanied by his father, Hillman alum Ron Johnson. While Ron focuses on making his criticisms of Hillman's football program known to Coach Coles (Method Man), Shaquille is excited to participate in all that college has to offer, including the ladies.
As Shaquille and Deborah lock eyes, it's clear they have a lot of history. History that will define both of their freshman years.
Cut to move-in day at Whitley Gilbert Hall, as Deborah finds out she will be sharing a room with Rashida instead of having a room to herself. No one is thrilled about the situation, including Whitley herself, but the freshmen make do with what they have.
As Deborah settles in, Whitley meets up with Dwayne on the front lawn. As the moment turns somber, it is revealed that the two have been separated for a while. Both admit that they focused so much on raising their children that they neglected their marriage.
However, the Waynes aren't the only ones with family issues. At the same time, other freshmen are experiencing their own adjustment issues.
Rashida FaceTimes her mom, played by Tichina Arnold, to express her concerns about her new situation. Her mom encourages her to be patient and stay focused. Her tribe will come along eventually.

Meanwhile, the boys struggle with Hillman's housing shortage. Ron is upset because he feels like the HBCU isn't treating Shaquille like the star he is. But Shaquille remains focused on the promise he made to his mom to attend Hillman before she died. They both agreed that attending the college would be good for him.
Ron was completely oblivious to the conversation, and Shaquille said that was because Ron never wanted to talk about his deceased wife. At that point, Ron storms out of the dorm.
Back at Whitley Gilbert Hall, Deborah convinces Rashida and Hazel (Kennedi Reece) to go out and party, promising to get them back home before freshman curfew. While there, Deborah and Shaquille reconnect emotionally and physically, drawn into each other's orbit like when they were in high school. Everything appears to be going nicely until Rashida notices the time: 1 am.
The group rushes back to their dorm, only to be caught by their RA, Candace. She threatens to report the girls to the board until Deborah leverages her personal connections to get Candace to back down.

Rashida, feeling betrayed, reprimands Deborah for using her privilege to bypass Hillman's rules. She doesn't want to lose her scholarship because of Deborah's recklessness.
The episode closes out with a university-wide convocation featuring Hillman's president, Dorothy Davenport (Jennifer Lewis). During the ceremony, students begin getting text alerts saying their grants have been taken away. To get answers, Deborah directly confronts Hillman leadership by asking, "Where is the money?"
The audience joins in, much to Whitley's dismay, and Dwayne does his best to calm everyone down, but to no avail.
President Davenport, feeling backed into a corner, ultimately resigns in disgrace. This creates a domino effect of chaotic events that sets the stage for an exciting season 1.
A Different World is available to stream on Netflix.
