Everyone is feeling tired and restless on day 3 of the Hillman student sit-in when Netflix’s A Different World season 1 finale begins. The other students turn to Deborah for guidance, but the only thing to do for now is wait.
Meanwhile, Dwayne and Whitley are in a better place and able to devote their energy to solving Hillman's financial crisis once and for all. Fortunately, Senator Douglas visits bearing good news: HBCU funding legislation has passed! This means the government will set aside funds for Hillman moving forward, effectively ending their budget crisis.
It's a huge win!
Byron and Dwayne shake hands out of mutual respect for what they've accomplished at Hillman, and it appears that they've at least called a truce.
Everyone wins

Afterwards, Dwayne and Whitley meet with the students involved in the sit-in to deliver the good news, but are met with new demands. The students request that no disciplinary action be taken against them and that a student representative be allowed to meet regularly with the president, among other things.
Ellington shares his family's history of activism and civil rights. He's a Huxtable, specifically the son of Dwayne's old classmate, Denise. The full-circle moment is not lost on Dwayne, who momentarily reels from the shock of meeting Denise's grown son. However, he recovers long enough to admit he made some mistakes and understands the importance of advocacy.
As a result, President Wayne promises that no action will be taken against the students involved in the sit-in...this time. He also underscores the importance of Hillman being united moving forward. The budget cuts were tough on everyone. They should never have been on opposite sides.
Regardless, the students consider this a win.
After the sit-in, Jalen and Amir talk. Jalen admits that he likes Amir and wants to pursue a relationship with him. But Amir is hesitant, so Jalen asks him to meet at the serenity garden during the end-of-year gala if he changes his mind.
One step forward, two steps back
Meanwhile, Deborah is crushed when she finds out that Dwayne pulled strings to get her into Hillman. She sees it as another instance of her parents not believing in her. But Rashida encourages her to see the positives: their friendship.
While Deborah and Rashida talk, Hazel comes in with good news: she's been accepted into Congresswoman James' leadership institute in DC. The program will help her hone her leadership skills and be the best student she can be.
However, outside of the girls' room, things turn tense as Rashida's mom and Whitley fight over a moving cart. Rashida and Deborah ultimately have to separate the two to prevent a full-blown fight. Afterwards, Deborah makes it clear that she doesn't appreciate Dwayne and Whitley's role in her admittance to Hillman. She feels she might never be enough for her parents.
The next day, Rashida is working her shift at The Pit when Professor Brooks approaches her with a big offer: She wants Rashida to continue her research over the summer. Rashida is initially excited, but grows nervous that her mom will be upset if she doesn't come home for the summer.
At the same time, Deborah confronts Shaquille over his night with Candace. She makes it clear that she's officially done with the athlete and his gaslighting. He's blocked.
Back at the girls' dorm, Rashida surprises Kojo with a romantic night in. She tells Kojo about the opportunity from Professor Brooks, and he encourages her to take it. He'll even stay with her at Hillman over the summer. To celebrate, the two have sex for the first time.
A new chapter begins at Hillman

Now, it's time for Hillman's annual end-of-year gala!
Deborah walks in and sees her parents, who apologize for pulling strings to get her into Hillman. Dwayne makes it clear that he and Whitley are proud of what Deborah has accomplished. They even offer her their Brooklyn condo for the summer, on the condition that she pays them back the money she owes.
Over on the other side of the ballroom, Hazel confronts Jalen. He apologizes profusely to the newly crowned Miss Gilbert Hall and says that his identity issues don't excuse his behavior. He likes hanging out with Hazel; that hasn't changed.
Hazel admits that she wasn't completely honest with Jalen either. She recognizes that he has feelings for Amir and asks Jalen not to hurt him. All in all, the two end on a good note.
Meanwhile, Rashida introduces Kojo to her mom, and the two hit it off. Rashida then tells her mom about the opportunity Professor Brooks offered her. Overall, her mom is supportive. She wants Rashida to spread her wings and not be limited to their family corner store.
Unfortunately, Rashida's happiness is short-lived when Kojo overhears her and Andre talking about their sexual relationship over winter break. Kojo feels betrayed and breaks things off with her. Rashida, heartbroken, cries in her mother's arms.
At the same time, Amir's probation officer confronts him for missing a check-in during the sit-in. Amir apologizes, but it's too late. His probation officer reported him, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
In other news, Hazel and Xavier share a moment, but she makes it clear that she has a long-distance boyfriend. And Xavier says he respects that.
The gala ends with a special announcement from Senator Douglas. He has chosen someone to assume Dwayne's place as President of Hillman, much to his chagrin.
Back at the girls' dorm, Deborah is occupied by the news of Shaquille's move to Colorado. However, she has a surprise guest. Ellington is standing in her room, candles lit, a rose in hand. He asks Deborah for another chance, explaining that his feelings for her are strong.
For a moment, Deborah hesitates. Then seemingly decides to try again with Ellington, and the two kiss.
In other news: Hazel's boyfriend gets accepted to Hillman, Freddie and Ron sleep together, ICE asks for Kojo's papers, Dwayne asks for Denise's help, and Shaquille leaves for Colorado.
Thankfully, A Different World has been renewed for season 2, so we'll eventually get answers to all of these cliffhangers.
A Different World is available to stream on Netflix.
