Episode 3 of Netflix’s A Different World opens with some good news: refund checks are available to students on financial aid. But while everyone is celebrating the extra dollar signs in their bank account, trouble brews on the horizon.

The Friday Fest headliner dropped out, leaving Hillman with no one to perform for homecoming. Deborah, who sees her chance to become a hero, tells everyone she knows R&B singer Summer Walker and can get her to perform.

But Candace makes it clear: If Deborah succeeds, she's forgiven. If she fails, Candace will tell everyone it was Deborah's fault. No pressure!

The legends of Hillman return

While Deborah figures out how to save Friday Fest, Hillman alumni arrive for Homecoming weekend.

Colonel Taylor and his wife, Jalessa, visit The Pit to eat and see their old friends, and while there, they gossip about Whitley and Dwayne's marriage.

We then cut to a therapist's office where Dwayne and Whitley talk through some of their biggest problems. The therapist encourages the couple to voice their issues and decide what they want to do about the separation. Will they continue working on things, or get divorced?

Meanwhile, Amir and Hazel meet a cute student named Jalen. But a problem arises: they both like him. So who will Jalen choose?

The girls need Summer Walker

Initially, Deborah plans to get access to Summer through the singer's nail tech, Kayla. But when Kayla makes it clear that she doesn't book gigs for her clients, Deborah and Rashida have to go to plan B.

Somehow, the two track down where Summer is staying and pose as Kayla's interns to get inside. But when their act falls apart, the duo is forced to tell Summer the truth.

While she appreciates their passion, Summer turns down the opportunity to perform at Hillman. It's too short notice. Alas, it looks like Deborah's work was naught. Until Kayla steps in and advises Summer to reconsider...

Marriage is hard work

Back at Hillman, Colonel Taylor and Jalessa offer Whitley and Dwayne some much-needed advice.

Jalessa even reveals that she once stepped out on Colonel Taylor with Walter. However, the couple eventually found their way back to each other with the help of "therapy, patience, and a substantial amount of tequila." At the same time, Colonel Taylor is advising Dwayne to make some big cuts to save Hillman.

Friday Fest is here

Thanks to Kayla's assistance, Summer Walker performs at Friday Fest towards the end of episode 3.

During her performance, she gives a special shout-out to Deborah, putting her convocation controversy to bed and making her a hero to her peers.

While Summer performs, Shaquille and Deborah share a special dance. They might have their share of issues, but chemistry was never one of them.

But just when things seem to be going well for Deborah, she's hit with another consequence of her actions. Her parents find out she charged $14,000 to her credit card and decide to cut her off. She now has to find a way to pay off her debt, with no money currently in the bank.

Looks like Deborah's going to need a job.
