Cuffing season begins at Hillman, as financial stress and love issues threaten to put a damper on everyone's vibe in season 1, episode 4 of Netflix's A Different World.
A Different World opens with Resident Assistant Candace (Renee Harrison) offering her students some words of wisdom for cuffing season. The boys are getting a similar lesson from their RA, who advises them to be safe and smart.
They are all excited about the opportunities that cuffing season presents, but as we've seen so far, things don't always go according to plan for the Hillman freshmen.
Unemployment? I don't know her
Over at The Pit, Deborah appeals to Nellie for a job. She plans to make up for her lack of legitimate work experience with her social skills, which doesn't seem to be the best idea. But Nellie sees potential and places her under Rashida's management.
While Deborah adjusts to her new job, Shaquille does a primetime interview with former athlete/sports podcaster Cam Jordan. During the interview, the five-star athlete implies that he is responsible for putting Hillman on the map. Uh-oh.
Following the disastrous interview, Coach Coates confronts Shaquille, admonishing him for speaking out of turn and alienating his teammate. He advises Shaquille to step up as a leader and put his ego aside. For Shaquille, this includes reaching out to Andre to make things right.
You look like liberation
Love is in the air at Hillman. As Rashida and Kojo enjoy a night out on the town, Amir makes a new connection with a spoken word poet. The two share the night together, and seem to be heading in the right direction...at least for now.
Back on campus, Shaquille plans a lovely picnic for Deborah in the garden. His efforts reaffirm his love for Deborah and desire to make their relationship exclusive. However, Deborah isn't quite ready for commitment and asks for some time to think about it.
Deborah works hard for the money
The next day, Deborah is back at work. However, instead of fulfilling her regular duties, Deborah pivots to becoming an influencer for The Pit.
Rashida takes issue with Deborah's inconsistent work ethic and fires her, leaving the young Wayne unemployed...again. It's only when she visits Ellington that Deborah starts to realize that she may have a learning disability that impairs her ability to focus and commit to her activities.
Rashida takes the time to reevaluate things herself and, with some chiding from Nellie, eventually rehires Deborah.
Meanwhile, Hazel, vying for the title of Ms. Gilbert Hall, collects signatures from her classmates while also searching for potential cuff mates(?). For a while, she's more successful at the former than the latter. That is, until she runs into Jalen.

Shaquille steps up
At The Pit, Shaquille finally tracks Andre down to make things right. While Andre is initially opposed to his efforts, he empathizes when Shaquille opens up about the death of his mother. Andre understands how important mothers are to their children, and the two call a truce.
Meanwhile, Kojo and Rashida share an intimate moment in Kojo's dorm. But things get too real for Rashida, and she runs off before she and Kojo can talk.
Eventually, Rashida reveals that she is a virgin, and she's not ready to have sex yet. However, Kojo reassures her that he's willing to take things slow and go at Rashida's pace.
On the other side of campus, things are anything but slow as Deborah and Shaquille reconnect in a very passionate, physical way. It looks like Deborah is ready to commit to her relationship with Shaquille...at least for now.
A Different World is available to stream on Netflix.
