After what has felt like light-years, Ahsoka is finally coming back, and the first trailer for season 2, unveiled at Disney's D23 Entertainment Showcase, proves the Force is strong with this next season.
It's been nearly three years since the season 1 finale left Master and Apprentice Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) stranded on Peridea, a planet in a galaxy far, far away from their own, while Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) stowed away on Grand Admiral Thrawn's ship as it jumped into hyperspace.
A loud gasp escaped me when I heard Thrawn calling the Republic the Rebel Alliance. Season 2 finally picks up that thread, and based on the trailer, it's picking it up with a vengeance. And it even looks like we will get some pretty cool fighter scenes, including one with B-Wings attacking a Star Destroyer, which we don't often get in the scripted series.
Meanwhile, back in the more familiar galaxy, Hera Syndulla, Ezra, and Chopper are gearing up to face down Thrawn, who's declared open war on the New Republic. Not to mention a new red planet, which has to be Dathomir, homeworld of the Nightsisters, right?!
Anakin is back
I’m not afraid to say my inner fangirl squealed at the return of Hayden Christensen as the Force ghost of Anakin Skywalker. Finally, FINALLY, Hayden is getting the respect he deserves as Anakin. Ever the tragic hero, Anakin is there to guide, challenge, and needle Ahsoka with the question that's defined her entire character arc: "Are you a Jedi or not?”
During one scene, Anakin is seen telling his Padawan that he is always by her side. Fans will also get flashbacks to the Clone Wars era, showing a young Ahsoka training under a fearless Anakin. The scenes are truly moving, especially seeing Anakin wearing the Clone Wars armor. I will allow myself a moment of childlike glee and say that this looks amazing.
The trailer closes out with Ahsoka saying, “We’re in more danger than I thought.” And frankly, that was true on more than one front. Star Wars fans were starting to grow impatient with the long wait, so let's hope this new season can be the redemption arc we all desperately want and need.
Ahsoka season 2 premieres Wednesday, January 20, 2027, exclusively on Disney+. That date was a perfect choice, landing just one month before Star Wars' 50th anniversary theatrical re-release and making the timing feel like a deliberate ode to the franchise's illustrious history.
