Made from fire under the shadows and malice of Morgoth, the Balrogs are one of the most powerful creatures and servants of darkness. A Balrog’s crimson tongue, fiery body, and breath of fire are all that make this iconic creature so memorable and important in the lore.
These dark creatures of ancient magic have been around for thousands of years, and while the general audience knows only one from the onscreen adaptations, there were, in fact, thousands who supported Morgoth’s cause.
Ever since Gandalf’s epic battle against the Balrog that lived under the Misty Mountains called Durin’s Bane, the creature with the heart of fire has been impossible to overlook. Though Balrogs don’t always take center stage in Tolkien’s and the onscreen lore, their presence is nonetheless symbolic and hard to ignore.
As for The Rings of Power season 3, the infamous Balrog that appeared at the end of season one will take center stage in the war for Middle-earth. This will be the first time the formidable creature will be explored beyond what’s already known about it and how it comes into play with the show’s narrative.
The Balrog is one of Tolkien’s most fearsome creatures
Tolkien’s Balrogs have gone through many changes since they were first conceived by the writer and even after The Lord of the Rings. While these creatures may not have frequently shaped the events explored in the lore, there’s a certain allure and mythological importance attached to their existence.
We saw a brief yet powerful glimpse of one of these Balrogs, namely Durin’s Bane — a name earned after the creature killed the Dwarf king Durin VI and drove the rest of his kin out of their home in The Fellowship of the Ring.
When Frodo and the others tried to go through Moria, they were met with the ferocious Balrog. This is where the famous battle between Gandalf and Durin’s Bane took place when the creature met them at the Bridge of Khazad-dum.
In Prime Video’s Rings of Power, the Balrog was first introduced when it was awoken from its slumber during mining. The dwarves became greedy and mined deep in the mountains for mithril. Their ambition led the dwarves to death’s door, but fortunately, King Durin abandoned his ring of power and regained his senses. He fought the Balrog and saved the kingdom for the time being.
Now, the Balrog is all set to reenter the scene in season 3 and unleash the chaos. It seems that the creature has yet to have a very important confrontation with the Dark Lord about the One Ring.
Season 3 will mark a fateful encounter between Sauron and the Balrog
The Rings of Power season 3 trailer was featured at the 2026 SDCC, along with the announcement of new cast additions. However, what really shocked fans was the exclusive in-room-only featurette that came with the news of Simon Pegg joining The Rings of Power season 3 as the voice behind the Balrog.
This will be the first time that Tolkien’s famed creature of darkness will be given a voice. Although there’s no evidence in the books about the Balrogs speaking, since they were once Maiar, it wouldn’t come off too bizarre. If the show decides to stick to this creative liberty based on this fact, it might not seem too outlandish to see the fiery creature having an actual conversation.
Apparently, there’s always going to be debate about the accuracy of Tolkien’s adaptations, but it would be interesting to see how this change can affect the narrative altogether. There’s a reason why the Balrog has a voice, and that’s Sauron.
It seems that Sauron will learn about the secrets to crafting the One Ring from the Balrog. It looks like the show will be exploring unknown territory in Tolkien’s lore, specifically the details of how to create the One Ring. Since Tolkien never explains how exactly the crafting happens, this gives the showrunners enough room to add something as radical as a talking Balrog.
What’s more, the featurette, which focused on the creatures introduced in season 3, described the Balrog as an “intelligent, dangerous adversary.” They also hinted at how wild it's going to be to have Sauron meet the Balrog in the flesh.
This will be a crucial meeting because it’s an opportunity to explore the true nature of the One Ring and to learn what makes it so special. It was created in the fires of Mount Doom, and as a creature of fire itself, the Balrog may know something about the fundamentals of dark magic that Sauron in his present state may not be aware of.
There’s a reason why the ring was created in the fire and can only be destroyed in it. Also, how does it become the one ring to rule them all? From the trailer, it’s evident that a huge chunk of the show will be focused on Sauron’s quest to craft the One Ring.
Ultimately, The Rings of Power will leave no stone unturned in shedding the spotlight on its creatures, whether it’s the Balrog or the Fell-creatures. Season 3 will likely focus on Sauron’s rise to power and the inception of the One Ring, which makes the Balrog’s role all the more fascinating.
